Jack Johnson Joins Women’s Hockey Coaching Staff

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women's hockey head coach Nadine Muzerall announced Thursday the hiring of Jack Johnson as associate head coach.
"We're really excited to have a new member join our family here at Ohio State," Muzerall said. "To bring in Jack Johnson is going to continue to make our program better, both on the ice and really contribute to recruiting. When we talk about Ohio State, we talk about family and how we're all united. I think its very important that he exemplifies that. He's going to bring that to our program and I think our recruits are going to see that and I know our girls are going to feel that."
Johnson played 19 seasons in the National Hockey League and retired earlier this year. He was selected third overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes and went on to play for the Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Colorado Avalanche, Chicago Blackhawks and Columbus Blue Jackets.
"It's such a privilege and honor to be involved with the best women's college hockey program in the country," Johnson said. "I can't wait for the season to start and to continue Ohio State's pursuit of national championships."
Johnson won the Stanley Cup in 2022 with the Avalanche, becoming just the 19th player in NHL history to win the Cup after playing 1,000 games. Johnson played two stints in Columbus, joining the team in 2011 for seven seasons before re-signing with the club in 2024 and retiring as a Blue Jacket.
He finished his NHL career with 1,831 blocks, 1,931 hits and 265 points in 1,228 games played.
Since announcing his retirement from professional hockey in January, Johnson joined the Vancouver Canucks as a professional scout.
In addition to his NHL career, Johnson has represented the United States at every level. He earned a silver medal at the 2010 Olympics and played for five U.S. Men's National Teams (2007, 09, 10, 11, 12) and two U.S. Men's National Under-18 Teams (2004, 05).
Johnson played collegiately for the University of Michigan, earning CCHA All-Rookie Team honors in 2006 and a First Team All-CCHA nod in 2007. He was named the CCHA Offensive Defenseman of the Year his sophomore season. He earned his degree from Michigan in 2022.
Johnson joins Muzerall and assistant coaches Kelsey Cline and Logan Davis on the Buckeyes' staff.
