
Buckeyes Close Out Grind City Classic with Win Over Memphis

The Buckeyes went 2-2 at the tournament, winning both games against Memphis and going 0-2 against Louisiana Tech.
Game Recap
- The Tigers scored once in the bottom of the first inning and once in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead over the Buckeyes.
- Alex Bemis walked to lead off the top of the third inning. With two outs on the board, Lee Ellis went yard for the first time this season, sending one 381 feet out of the park to tie the score, 2-2.
- With one out in the top of the fourth, Steven Cavaco drew a walk. With two outs, Maddix Simpson stepped up to the plate and doubled to left field to send Cavaco home and give the Buckeyes the lead, 3-2. Simpson would score on a Memphis error to put Ohio State ahead by two, 4-2.
- In the top of the fifth inning, Noah Furcht hit his first home run as a Buckeye, a 355-foot solo shot to extend the Ohio State lead to three, 5-2.
- Cavaco and pinch hitter Jacob Parr drew back-to-back walks to lead off the sixth inning. A sacrifice bunt from Miles Vandenheuvel scored Cavaco and a double from Ellis scored Parr to give the Buckeyes a 7-2 lead over the Tigers.
- In the top of the seventh, Grant Mangrum scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Simpson to put Ohio State ahead, 8-2.
- The Tigers went down in order in the eighth and Andrew Edrington fanned three of four faced in the ninth to secure the 8-2 victory for the Buckeyes.
- Ellis led the Buckeyes with two hits and three RBIs.
- Vandenheuvel and Simpson each had two RBIs.
- Pierce Herrenbruck (1-0) earned his first win on the mound. He struck out three and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
- Edrington struck out three in a 1.0-inning relief appearance to close out the game.
- The Buckeye pitching staff allowed just three hits and tossed seven scoreless innings.
- The Buckeyes take on UTSA, Ole Miss and Texas at the BRUCE BOLT College Classic benefiting the Astros Foundation Feb. 27-March 1 at Daikin Park, the home of the Houston Astros.
