Ninth Inning Comeback Falls Short as Buckeyes Defeated by UTSA

HOUSTON, Texas – The Ohio State baseball team (5-3) fell to UTSA (8-1), 6-5, on Friday in the first game of the BRUCE BOLT College Classic benefiting the Astros Foundation at Daikin Park.

- Miles Vandenheuvel walked to lead off the top of the first inning, and he was driven home by a double down the left field line from Lee Ellis. A single up the middle from Henry Kaczmar scored Ellis and gave the Buckeyes the early 2-0 lead over the Roadrunners.
- An RBI double from UTSA in the bottom of the first inning cut the Buckeye lead in half, 2-1.
- In the top of the second, Alex Bemis led off with a double to center field. With two outs, Vandenheuvel and Ellis both walked to load the bases, but they were stranded.
- With one out in the top of the fifth, Noah Furcht hit his second home run of the season to put Ohio State back ahead by two, 3-1.
- The Roadrunners tied the score, 3-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning after a two-RBI single up the middle.
- A two-run home run from UTSA in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Roadrunners their first lead of the day, 5-3, and, in the bottom of the eighth, they scored on a Buckeye error to get ahead by three, 6-3.
- Vandenheuvel hit an infield single to lead off the ninth inning, followed by a double from Ellis to put them both in scoring position. A groundout from Mason Eckelman scored Vandenheuvel and a groundout from Furcht scored Ellis to put the Buckeyes within one run of the lead, 6-5. The Roadrunners, however, secured the last out and the one-run victory.
- Ellis, Furcht, Kaczmar and Maddix Simpson led the Buckeyes with two hits each.
- Furcht had a team-high two RBIs.
- Gavin Kuzniewski struck out five and gave up three runs on six hits in a 6.0-inning no-decision.
- Zak Sigman (1-1) took the loss on the mound. He struck out two and allowed two runs on one hit in 1.0 inning pitched.
- The Buckeyes face No. 25 Ole Miss at 11 a.m. CT/noon ET on Saturday, Feb. 28 and take on No. 3 Texas at 2 p.m. CT/3 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 1.
