COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophie Eppestun and Kary Hollenbaugh each fired final rounds of 2-under 70 to lead Ohio State into a third-place finish in a very strong field at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational in Sarasota, Fla., this week.
As a team, the Buckeyes carded a 1-under 287 to move up two spots and finish third in a 15-team field that included nine Top 50 ranked teams.
The freshman Eppelstun enjoyed the best event of her young career, carding rounds of 70-77-70 to finish in third place at 1-over par. This was her second Top 5 finish in five events as she was also fifth at the Inverness Collegiate in the fall.
Hollenbaugh showed her All-American form on Monday, rebounding from a tough opening day to match Eppelstun with an under-par final round. The 70 vaulted her into a tie for 12th, her third-consecutive Top 15 finish at the Sun Coast Invitational.
Nellie Ong posted her best round of the event on Monday with a 1-over 73 as she played her final eight holes at 2-under par. Mandy Song, who played as an individual this week, posted three steady rounds of 74-75-75 to finish in a tie for 19th at 8-over par.
Matilde Santilli and Marina Joyce-Moreno also capped their tournaments well on Monday, carding rounds of 75 and 74 respectively.
The Buckeyes will have a couple weeks off before returning to action at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate at the Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The tournament will run March 2-4.
