COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (12-36, 4-24 Big Ten) lost game one in its series against Illinois (28-22, 13-15 Big Ten), 4-3, on Thursday.

- The Buckeyes get on the board first with a 372-foot home run from Trey Lipsey, putting them ahead 1-0.
- In the top of the third inning, Illinois scored one run to even the score, 1-1.
- With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Lipsey drew a walk, then back-to-back singles from Matthew Graveline and Tyler Pettorini plated one run to give the Buckeyes the lead, 2-1.
- The Fighting Illini added one run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2.
- Illinois plated one run in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead, 3-2.
- In the top of the ninth inning, Illinois scored on a fielding error to extend the lead to two, 4-2.
- Sal Mineo led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to the shortstop, then Reggie Bussey hit a single to right center to put runners on the corners. A sac bunt from Lipsey sent Mineo home to put the Buckeyes within one, 4-3, but the next two batters were retired, and Illinois came away with the win.
- Graveline led the Buckeyes in hits with three.
- Lipsey had a team high two RBIs
- Sahil Patel threw 4.0 innings and tied his career high in strikeouts with six. He gave up one run on two hits.
- Hunter Shaw (3-5) took the loss. He allowed two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes continue their series against the Fighting Illini with a game at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 16 and at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.
