
Buckeyes Drop Series Opener Against Rutgers

Game Recap
- In the top of the first inning, Rutgers plated one run to take a 1-0 lead over the Buckeyes.
- Rutgers added three more runs in the top of the second inning to extend its lead, 4-0.
- With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Sal Mineo hit a single to right field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Trey Lipsey drew a walk, and Matthew Graveline loaded the bases with a single to the shortstop. Tyler Pettorini plated two runs with a single to right field to cut the Rutgers lead in half, 4-2.
- The Scarlet Knights scored three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to five, 7-2.
- In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mason Eckelman hit a single to left field then advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Maddix Simpson singled to left field then Ryan Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Reggie Bussey drew a walk to score Eckelman, cutting the Scarlet Knight lead to four, 7-3.
- Rutgers grabbed one more run off an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to take an 8-3 lead over the Buckeyes.
- Rutgers got four across in the top of the sixth to take a nine-run lead, 12-3. With two outs in top of the inning, lightning in the area led to a one-hour and 15-minute pause in the game. The Buckeyes got the final out when play resumed.
- In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ryan Miller hit a 420-foot solo home run to put the Buckeyes within eight, 12-4.
- In the top of the eighth inning, Rutgers scored five runs, extending their lead to 13, 17-4.
- In the bottom of the eighth inning, Mineo hit a two-out single, however he was left stranded, and the Scarlet Knights took the series-opener, 17-4.
- Eckelman led the Buckeyes with three hits, tying his career-high.
- Pettorini led the team in RBIs with two.
- Drew Erdmann (0-6) took the loss. He struck out four and gave up eight runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings pitched.
