
Buckeyes Fall to Spartans in Extra Innings

Game Recap
- A two-run home run for the Spartans in the bottom of the first inning gave them an early 2-0 lead over the Buckeyes.
- Will Carpenter doubled down the left field line to lead off the second inning for the Buckeyes. Mathew Graveline and Nick Giamarusti both walked to load the bases. A single through the left side for freshman Maddix Simpson tied the score, 2-2. With two outs, Trey Lipsey doubled down the right field line to send two more runs across and give the Buckeyes their first lead of the weekend, 4-2.
- Simpson led off with a single to left field in the top of the fourth and a sacrifice bunt from Reggie Bussey advanced him to second base. Lipsey reached on a Spartan fielding error and Simpson moved up to third to put runners on the corners. A single through the left side from Lee Ellis sent Simpson home and Lipsey scored on another Spartan error to extend the Buckeye lead, 6-2.
- In the bottom of the fifth inning, a two-RBI double and an RBI groundout from the Spartans left Ohio State leading by one run, 6-5.
- Michigan State reclaimed the lead, 8-6, in the bottom of the sixth after a two-RBI single and a score on a Buckeye error.
- With one out in the top of the seventh frame, Graveline walked. Ryan Miller then singled into right center field and Graveline advanced to third. Pinch hitter Sal Mineo came up big for the Buckeyes, hitting his first career triple to drive in two runs and tie the score, 8-8. Another single for Simpson plated Mineo and put Ohio State back in the lead 9-8.
- The Spartans tied things up, 9-9, in the bottom of the eighth inning after a solo home run.
- The Buckeyes and Spartans both went down in order in the ninth inning to send the game to extras.
- The Buckeyes were retired in order in the top of the 10th. The Spartans got one baserunner on in the bottom of the 10th, but Ohio State held them off to push the game to an 11th inning.
- With one out in the top of the 11th, pinch hitter Mason Eckelman singled to left center, but the next two Buckeyes were retired.
- In the bottom of the 11th, a walk-off solo home run for the Spartans earned them the 10-9 win.
- Simpson led the team with three hits, tying his career-high. He also had a team-high and career-high three RBIs.
- Lipsey had two hits and two RBIs, and Mineo drove in a career-high two runs.
- In a 4.2-inning no-decision, starter Gavin Kuzniewski fanned four, tying his career-high. He gave up five runs on four hits.
- Hunter Shaw (2-4) took the loss. He struck out four and allowed two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes wrap up their series against Michigan State on Sunday, April 20 at 1:00 p.m.
