
Spencer Clinches 4-3 Win for No. 17 Buckeyes over No. 14 Duke

Ohio State is now 5-1 this spring
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 17-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team was a 4-3 winner at No. 14 Duke Friday in Durham, N.C. The Buckeyes are now 5-1 on the year and the Blue Devils are 5-2.

The Buckeye duo of Luciana Perry and Teah Chavez posted an upset over Duke's No. 11-ranked team to open doubles, but the Blue Devils captured the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. Ohio State won the first three completed singles matches, with victories from Chavez, Sydni Ratliff and Nao Nishino, for a 3-1 lead. Duke evened the team score at three-all, with the match to be decided on court six. Buckeye Audrey Spencer rallied from a set down and prevailed in a third set tiebreaker to seal the Ohio State victory.

How it Happened
- The Buckeyes took the first doubles match, with the tandem of Luciana Perry and Teah Chavez downing Duke's No. 11-ranked Irina Balus and Ellie Coleman, 6-4.
- The Blue Devils won on courts two (6-2) and three (6-4) to claim the doubles point.
- Chavez, ranked 55th, rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 29 Emma Jackson on court two to tie the match at 1-all.
- On court five Sydni Ratliff followed with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Coleman, coming from behind in the second set, for a 2-1 Buckeye lead.
- Buckeye freshman and No. 107 ranked Nao Nishino rallied for a three-set victory on court four vs. No. 51 Shavit Kimchi. After dropping the first set 6-2, Nishino tied the match with a 6-2 win and then dropped just one game in the third set.
- Duke captured the next two matches to tie the team score at three-all.
- On court three, No. 23 Eleana Yu defeated Shelly Bereznyak in a close match, 7-5, 6-4.
- The court one match between No. 9 Perry and No. 11 Balus went the distance. The Blue Devil took set one, 6-4, and the Buckeye answered with a 6-2 victory in the second set. Balus pulled away at the end for a 7-5 win in the third set to tie the team score.
- The match came down to a third set tiebreaker on court six between Audrey Spencer and Katie Codd. After dropping the first set, 6-3, Spencer won the second, 6-4. Codd rallied from down 0-4 in the third set, which eventually went to a tiebreak. Spencer was behind 0-2 to start but won the next three points for a 3-2 lead. Codd evened the breaker at three-all before Spencer took control, winning four of the final five points to prevail in the tiebreaker, 7-4, and clinch the singles match and team victory.
- Chavez and Nishino are both 5-0 in dual match singles. Bereznyak's loss was her first this spring and she is now 4-1.
The Schedule Ahead
- The Buckeyes are headed home for matches later this month. The team will face No. 13 Oklahoma State on Feb. 23 followed by the first Big Ten home matches against Purdue Feb. 28 and Indiana March 2.
- Admission and parking are free for all Ohio State home matches.
