COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team rebounded from Friday night's loss at No. 3 Minnesota to defeat the Gophers, 7-3, Saturday at Ridder Arena.
The Buckeyes (21-6-3, 15-6-3 WCHA) and Gophers (22-6-1, 16-5-1 WCHA) are back to a tie for second in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings with 48 points.
Short Story
Minnesota took the first lead of the day less than two minutes into the game, but every time the Gophers scored, Ohio State junior forward Sloane Matthews had an answer.
Matthews tied the game 1:13 into the second period and when Minnesota scored on the power play at 6:07, she scored 1:21 later to tie the game again. The Gophers took the 3-2 lead with 5:45 to play in the second period, but Matthews tallied her third goal of the period with 50 seconds on the clock to tie the game at the second intermission.
Mira Jungåker gave Ohio State its first lead of the game, scoring just 33 seconds into the third period on the power play for the 4-3 advantage. From that point on, it was all Buckeyes. Jocelyn Amos (4:11) and Emma Peschel (4:48) scored within a minute of each other to give Ohio State three straight power play goals and the 6-3 lead.
Minnesota scored with 11:23 to play in the third to cut the Buckeye lead to two goals, but an Ohio State challenge for offsides was successful and wiped the goal off the board.
Kiara Zanon put the game away, scoring the Buckeyes' seventh goal of the game, and fourth consecutive tally, with 2:54 remaining.
Hailey MacLeod earned the start for the Buckeyes and played the first two periods before Amanda Thiele went in for the third period. MacLeod made 19 saves and Thiele added 11 for the win.
