Ohio State Falls to No. 24 Penn State in Marathon Five-Setter

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team (5-19, 2-14 B1G) fell to No. 24 Penn State (15-11, 9-7 B1G) in a marathon five-set match (22-25, 25-15, 31-29, 14-25, 12-15) on Sunday afternoon in State College.
Penn State scored a couple extra points late in a tight first set to earn a 25-22 set win. Ohio State evened the match by winning the second set, using a 7-0 run midway through the set to cruise to a 25-15 set win. The Buckeyes fought off four Nittany Lions set points to win a marathon third set by a 31-29 margin. Penn State forced a fifth set with a 25-14 set win in the fourth set. The Nittany Lions used a 5-0 run midway through the fifth set to win by a 15-12 margin.

- S1: Jones opened the match with a kill before Penn State built an early 7-4 lead. Ohio State used a 3-0 run to tie the set at seven and a 4-0 run to take an 11-8 advantage on a block from Jones and Ashley Carr. The Buckeyes pushed the lead to 15-10 at the media timeout but the Nittany Lions battled back to tie the set at 17. The set was knotted again at 19 and 21 before PSU strung together three-unanswered points on its way to a 25-22 set win.
- S2: The second set was tight early as the Buckeyes scored first but the teams found themselves tied at 10. Ohio State scored the next seven points in the set, a run capped by a block from Jones and Kaia Castle, to take a commanding 17-10 lead. The Nittany Lions could score no more than two unanswered points down the stretch as the Buckeyes evened the match with a 25-15 set win after scoring the final three points of the set.
- S3: The third set was a marathon featuring 20 ties and 10 lead changes throughout. Ohio State scored the first two points, but Penn State owned the next four as the score was tied five times by the times the teams reached nine points apiece. Neither team led by more than two points as the Buckeyes scored back-to-back to head into the media timeout with a 15-13 advantage. Penn State used a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 21-19 lead, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes immediately tied the set out of the timeout and took a 24-23 lead for set point. Penn State scored back-to-back points to take a 25-24 lead and its first set point. The Buckeyes fought off four Nittany Lions set points and scored four of the set's final points after trailing 28-27, to win by a 31-29 margin on an ace from Jones.
- S4: The Nittany Lions used an early 10-2 run to take an 11-4 lead. The Buckeyes were able to trim their deficit to four at 12-8, but Penn State responded with the next five points to increase the lead to 17-8. Ohio State was unable to string together more than two unanswered points down the stretch. PSU forced a fifth set with a 25-14 set win.
- S5: Penn State scored the first three points of the fifth set and led until Ohio State put together a 6-1 run to take a 7-6 lead – the Buckeyes' only lead of the set. The Nittany Lions scored the next five points and the teams traded points to end the match with Penn State winning the set by a 15-12 margin.
- Mia Tuman now ranks 10th in program history with 2,785 career assists after 47 assists today. Tuman passed Amanda Peterson, who accumulated 2,755 assists as a Buckeye. Tuman added 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.
- This is the third time this season that the Buckeyes have had at least three players with 10 or more digs apiece.
- This is the Buckeyes' eighth match of the season to need five sets to decide.
- Hannah Jones led the Buckeye offense with 23 kills and tied her career-high 10 digs for her second double-double of the season. This is her fourth match of the season with 20 or more kills and fourth with at least five blocks.
- Kaitlyn Hoffman totaled a season-high 12 digs.
- Olivia Hasbrook recorded 10 or more digs for the 14th time this season, totaling a team-high 14 digs today.
- Kaia Castle recorded 10 kills for the fifth time this season and also had at least five blocks for the fifth time this season.
- S1: Each team had a trio of runs of three or more unanswered points during the set.
- S2: The Buckeyes used a 7-0 run midway through the set to take control.
