Four Gold Medalists Lead Buckeyes at OSU Open

Buckeyes total 15 Top 3 finishes
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing program started the season with 15 Top 3 finishes at the OSU Open in French Field House Saturday. Gloria Klughardt (women's epee), Natalia Botello (women's sabre), Matthew Buelau (men's epee) and Carter Berrio (men's sabre) all claimed gold medals to lead the Buckeyes.Â
OSU Duals Sunday
Sunday features six rounds of dual competition, with Ohio State, Wayne State, Cleveland State, Michigan, Purdue, Denison (men)Â and the OSU Club team (men) participating. Results will be updated throughout the day on OhioStateBuckeyes.com. Admission and parking are free.

Women's Epee
The Buckeyes claimed all four semifinal spots in women's epee. Gloria Klughardt was the No. 1 seed after pools and ended as the event champion. She downed teammate Sally Fan, the No. 2 seed, 15-9 in the final. Klughardt topped teammate Erika Gumagay, 15-13, in the semifinals. Fan was a 15-14 winner over Buckeye Julia Semikin in the semis. Newcomer Gillian Schultz ended fifth after reaching the Table of 8, where she fell to Gumagay by a touch, 12-11.

Women's Foil
Buckeye newcomer Maria Cojocari was the silver medalist in women's foil, dropping the final bout, 15-7. Cojocari prevailed by a touch, 15-14, in the semifinals. Another Buckeye newcomer, Lira Cannon, placed fifth after advancing to the Table of 8.

Women's Sabre
The No. 1 seed out of pools, Natalia Botello ended the event as the champion with a 15-7 win in the final. Grace Fan tied for third; she was a 15-4 winner in the Table of 8 over teammate Hamsika Arnipalli, who placed eighth. Arlow Wiggers was sixth, as she fell in the third round, 15-13. Newcomer Varvara Mankova was seventh, reaching the Table of 8 before a 15-11 loss ended her run.

Buckeye Matthew Buelau, the No. 6 seed after pools, took the men's epee crown with a 15-11 win over Ohio State alum and No. 1 seed Gabriel Feinberg in the final. In the semifinals, Buelau downed his freshman teammate Jakob Stange, 15-10, for a third-place finish for Stange. Ayush Shah was eighth after reaching the table of eight as the No. 13 seed. Â

Lorenzo Mion and Mitchell Huth both reached the semifinals in men's foil. Mion defeated teammate Samuel Freedman in the Table of 8, 15-9, before falling 15-11 in the semifinals. Huth was a 15-7 winner in the Table of 8 but fell 15-13 in the semifinals. Solin Li, who lost to the eventual champion in the Table of 8, finished seventh and Freedman was eighth.

The Buckeyes took the top four spots in men's sabre. Newcomer Carter Berrio was the gold medalist after defeating Samuel Rightler in the final, 15-13. Hank Bauer and James Schardine tied for third. Rightler topped Bauer in the semis, 15-10, and Berrio advanced with a 15-6 win over Schardine, who was the No. 2 seed after pools. Avin Rai and Kelly Liu were sixth and seventh, respectively, after reaching the Table of 8.
