The Buckeyes Play Host to the Annual Wolstein Classic Thursday
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (1-0-1) scored a pair of first-half goals that held over the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win at Akron (0-1-1) Sunday in a road battle with the Zips at FirstEnergy Stadium.
How It Happened
Freshman David Ajagbe put the Buckeyes out front early (3') after a feed from Anthony Samways found the rookie forward alone in the box. Ajagbe then put it away in the lower right side of the net for his second score of the season. Referees confirmed after a review the play was on-side and the goal stood.
Junior Luciano Pechota put the Buckeyes up 2-0 after taking a feed out front from senior Deylen Vellios and putting it passed Akron keeper Mitch Budler for his seventh career goal and first of the year. Vellios now has four career assists.
Redshirt freshman keeper Patrick McLaughlin along with Ajagbe each earned starts for the first time in their respective Ohio State careers. McLaughlin saw his first action as a Buckeye. Ajagbe came off the bench in the season opener last Thursday and scored the equalizer in a 1-all draw in Columbus vs. Cleveland State.
Another freshman, midfielder Nick Skubis, also saw his first action as a Buckeye.
McLaughlin got his first shutout win with three saves on nine Akron shots.
