COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 Ohio State women's tennis team lost a Top 10 battle to No. 8 Pepperdine, 4-2, Friday evening in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.

The Buckeyes, now 7-5 this season, dropped the doubles point to open the match. Pepperdine then won two of the first three singles matches, with Buckeye freshman notching a win in the stretch, for a 3-1 lead. Shelly Bereznyak drew Ohio State within one (3-2), with the remaining matches in a third set. The Waves (8-2) prevailed on court one to clinch the victory.

How it Happened

Pepperdine opened the match with the doubles point, with a 6-1 on court three and 6-3 victory on court one.
The Waves moved the lead to 2-0 when No. 6-ranked Savannah Broadus topped Sydni Ratliff, 6-3, 6-2, on court two.
Buckeye freshman Audrey Spencer responded, as she defeated Vivan Yang, 6-3, 6-3, on court six.
The Waves went ahead 3-1 with a straight set win on court five, as No. 99-ranked Nikki Redelijk was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Teah Chavez.
Shelly Bereznyak continued her strong play this spring with a court four win to put the Buckeyes within one, 3-2. Bereznyak topped No. 117 Anna Campana, 6-3, 6-4, winning the final three games in each set for the victory. The junior is 7-2 in dual matches and on a seven-match winning streak.
The match came down to two matches that were in a third set.
The Waves sealed the victory with a court one win in a matchup of Top 15 players. Buckeye captain and No. 12-ranked Irina Cantos Siemers won the first set, 6-4, but No. 13 Lisa Zaar tied the match with a 6-2 win. In the third, Cantos Siemers was up a break early but Zaar took the final five games for the set, 6-3, and the match.
On court three, Buckeye freshman Luciana Perry, ranked 55th, lost the first set vs. No. 100 Janice Tjen, 6-4, but won the second, 6-4. Perry was up 4-1 in the third when the match was abandoned.

The Schedule Ahead

The Buckeyes will begin Big Ten play with a match vs. No. 2 Michigan at 6 p.m. next Friday (March 15).
Admission and parking are free for all regular season matches in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
