No. 11 Buckeyes Host No. 2 Wolverines, Travel for Match at Michigan State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 11-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team (7-5) opens Big Ten play with two matches this weekend. Ohio State will host No. 2 Michigan (12-3) at 6 p.m. Friday in the Ty Tucker Tennis Center and then head to East Lansing, Mich., for an 11 a.m. match against Michigan State (8-5) Sunday. Admission and parking are free for the match in Columbus.

In the Rankings

The Buckeyes moved to No. 11 in the ITA team rankings this week. The squad has been in the Top 15 all spring, reaching a season-high No. 7 Feb. 20.
In the most recent singles rankings, Irina Cantos Siemers is No. 12, with Luciana Perry a career-best No. 55.
In doubles, Ohio State has four duos in the rankings: No. 28 Perry/Sydni Ratliff, No. 32 Perry/Cantos Siemers, No. 56 Audrey Spencer/Perry and No. 80 Cantos Siemers/Ratliff.

Buckeyes vs. Wolverines

The Buckeyes and Wolverines met three times last season, with Michigan winning in an ITA National Indoors consolation match and in the regular season in Ann Arbor, 4-1, and in the Big Ten Tournament championship match, 4-2. It was the third year in a row the teams faced off in the final.
In the last 10 meetings between the teams, the Wolverines are ahead, 6-4
Friday will be the first match in Columbus between the teams since a 4-3 Buckeye victory April 1, 2022.
Michigan is 12-3 on the year, with five ranked singles players – No. 5 Kari Miller, No. 18 Julia Fliegner, No. 44 Gala Mesochoritou, No. 61 Lily Jones and No. 81 Jaedan Brown. Brown and Miller are ranked fourth in doubles.

Buckeyes vs. Spartans

Ohio State is 41-15 all-time vs. Michigan State, with wins in the last nine matches.
Last year, Ohio State was a 4-1 winner in East Lansing.
Michigan State, which is 8-5 on the year, is No. 71 in the ITA team rankings. The Spartan doubles team of Nicole Conard and Ayshe Can is ranked 38th.

Buckeye This and That

The Buckeyes are 5-1 at home this season, with wins over Notre Dame, Arizona State, Duke and UCLA, all by 4-0 scores, and a 4-1 victory over Washington. The squad dropped its first home match last Friday, falling to Pepperdine, 4-2.
The contest vs. Michigan wraps up a three-match homestand for the Buckeyes.
Irina Cantos Siemers broke the Buckeyes' all-time singles wins record in the match vs. UCLA Feb. 4. She now has 116 total singles wins and she recently moved into a tie for 10th in career doubles wins with 87.
Cantos Siemers' 203 combined singles/doubles wins rank third all-time, with Miho Kowase (2014-17) first (213) and Sandy Niehaus (2014-17) second (204).

Melissa Schaub, in her 12th year as head coach of the Buckeyes, is 227-77 in her career. She broke the program record for all-time coaching wins with a victory over UCLA Feb. 4.
Cantos Siemers leads the Buckeyes with an 8-2 singles mark this spring, while Shelly Bereznyak is second with a 7-2 ledger, with wins in her last seven completed matches. In doubles, the duo of Luciana Perry and Sydni Ratliff has a team-best 5-3 mark.
The Buckeyes are 8-2 on court one this spring, with a 7-2 record on court five. Ohio State has picked up five wins on courts three and six. In doubles, court one is 5-3, with court two 5-5 and court three 2-5.
Ohio State has won the doubles point in six of 12 matches this year.

The Schedule Ahead

Ohio State will travel for two matches next weekend, taking on Indiana March 23 and Purdue March 24.
The squad will return to Columbus to host Maryland at 5 p.m. March 29 and Rutgers at 11 a.m. March 31.
