COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (12-12, 2-1 Big Ten) was defeated by Purdue (17-12, 2-4 Big Ten), 7-1, in the teams' series finale on Sunday. The Buckeyes defeated the Boilermakers in two out of three games to win the series to open conference play.

Game Recap

The Buckeyes and the Boilermakers went scoreless through the first two innings of play.
Purdue got on the board in the top of the third frame, scoring on a Buckeye error, a three-run home run, and a bases-loaded walk to take a 5-0 lead over Ohio State.
In the bottom of the fourth, Henry Kaczmar was walked to lead off the inning. Matthew Graveline was up next, and he sent a double down the left field line, scoring Kaczmar all the way from first base to put the Buckeyes on the board and cut the Purdue lead to four, 5-1. Tyler Pettorini and Joseph Mershon drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Ohio State. The next three Buckeyes, however, were retired and all three runners were stranded.
In the top of the seventh, Purdue added a run on an RBI double to get back ahead of Ohio State by five, 6-1. The Boilermakers added one more run in the top of the eighth off an RBI triple to take a six-run lead, 7-1.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Trey Lipsey doubled to right center and then advanced on a groundout, but he was left on base as Purdue got the final out of the inning.
The Buckeyes turned a double play to end the top of the ninth and came up to bat once more. With one out, Mershon drew a walk. Isaac Cadena, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, then singled to right field. The Boilermakers, however, got the next two outs and Purdue came away with the 7-1 win.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

Graveline, Lipsey and Cadena each had one hit and Graveline had one RBI.
Gavin DeVooght struck out two and gave up one hit in a 2.0-inning no-decision.
Hunter Shaw (0-2) took the loss. He gave up five runs on four hits in 0.1 inning pitched.
Zak Sigman struck out two in a 1.1-inning appearance out of the bullpen and Logan Jones fanned three in 2.0 innings pitched.
