Lipsey’s Three-Run Homer Earns Buckeyes Walk-Off Win Over Purdue

Game Recap
- The Buckeyes took the early lead in game two against Purdue. Henry Kaczmar reached base in the bottom of the first after being hit by a pitch. A single up the middle from Tyler Pettorini advanced Kaczmar to third to put runners on the corners. Kaczmar then scored on a wild pitch to put Ohio State ahead, 1-0. A double to left center from Joseph Mershon sent Pettorini home and gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead.
- An RBI double from the Boilermakers in the top of the second cut the Ohio State lead in half, 2-1.
- With one out on the board in the bottom of the second frame, Hank Thomas singled to right field and then swiped the bag at second. A triple from Trey Lipsey that hit the wall in left field plated Thomas and put the Buckeyes back ahead by two, 3-1.
- The Boilermakers answered in the top of the third with a big inning; they took a 7-3 lead over the Buckeyes after a three-run home run, an RBI single and a two-RBI single.
- Matthew Graveline led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo home run over the wall in left center to put the Buckeyes within three runs of Purdue, 7-4.
- An RBI double from the Boilermakers in the top of the fourth, however, put them back in the lead by four runs, 8-4.
- Ohio State began to mount a comeback in the home half of the fourth. With two outs, Kaczmar hit an infield single. A double to left center from Graveline sent Kaczmar home. Pettorini was next up, and he tripled down the right field line to score Graveline. Mershon stepped up to the plate next and he also tripled, driving in a run to leave Ohio State trailing by just one, 8-7.
- Purdue added one run in the top of the sixth to get ahead of Ohio State by two, 9-7.
- In the top of the eighth, the Boilermakers extended their lead to three, 10-7, after an RBI single.
- Pettorini came up big in the bottom of the eighth inning, blasting the ball over the wall in right field to plate two runs and put the Buckeyes down by just one run, 10-9, going into the ninth inning.
- The Boilermakers were retired in order in the top of the ninth and the Buckeyes had one more chance to bat.
- Mitchell Okuley led off in the bottom of the ninth and he was hit by a pitch; he advanced to second base on a Purdue throwing error. With one out, Thomas was also hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Lipsey stepped up to the plate with two outs on the board and two runners on. With a 1-0 count, Lipsey swung and made contact, sailing the ball over the wall in left field to secure the 12-10 walk-off victory and series win over Purdue.
- Pettorini led the Buckeyes with four hits. He went 4-for-5 at the plate. He drove in three runs.
- Lipsey led Ohio State in RBIs with four.
- Lipsey, Graveline and Mershon each had two hits.
- Graveline and Pettorini led the team in runs scored with three each.
- Jacob Morin (2-0) earned the victory on the mound. He struck out two and did now allow any hits in 1.1 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes go for the series sweep when they host the third game in their series with the Boilermakers on Sunday, March 31 at 1:00 p.m.
