COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (11-11, 1-0 Big Ten) defeated Purdue (16-11, 1-3 Big Ten), 8-2, on Friday night at Bill Davis Stadium to open conference play.

- A two-run home run in the top of the first inning gave the Boilermakers an early 2-0 lead over Ohio State.
- Trey Lipsey singled to lead off the bottom of the first for the Buckeyes. Henry Kaczmar followed that up with a single to right field. Matthew Graveline was up next and he hit into a double play, but Lipsey was able to advance to third. Tyler Pettorini then singled to right field, scoring Lipsey to cut the Boilermaker lead in half, 2-1.
- In the bottom of the second, Nick Giamarusti doubled to lead off the inning. A groundout from Hank Thomas sent Giamarusti to third base. Josh Stevenson stepped up to the plate and sent a double into right field to plate Giamarusti and tie the score, 2-2.
- Back-to-back singles from Giamarusti and Thomas opened the bottom of the fourth inning for the Buckeyes. Stevenson came up big once again, singling right field to score Giamarusti and give Ohio State its first lead of the game, 3-2. A sacrifice fly from Lipsey sent Thomas home and gave the Buckeyes a two-run lead, 4-2. A single from Graveline sent Stevenson home and extended the Ohio State lead, 5-2.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Mitchell Okuley singled to right field with one out on the board. Giamarusti was next up and he went yard, sending the ball over the fence in right field to plate two runs and put the Buckeyes ahead by five, 7-2.
- Giamarusti singled to third base to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Stevenson continued his strong day, doubling to left field to drive in another run and put the Buckeyes up by six, 8-2.
- The Buckeyes held the Boilermakers off in the eighth and ninth to come away with the 8-2 victory.
- Giamarusti was one triple short of hitting for the cycle. He led the Buckeyes with a career-high four hits and went 4-for-5 at the plate.
- Stevenson added three hits for the Buckeyes.
- Lipsey, Giamarusti and Stevenson each batted in two runs.
- Stevenson led the Buckeyes in stolen bases with two.
- Landon Beidelschies (3-4) earned the win on the mound. He struck out seven in 7.0 innings tossed and allowed two runs on five hits.
- The Buckeyes continue their series against Purdue March 30-31. Saturday's game time has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. due to incoming rain.
