
Buckeyes Open Las Vegas Classic with Victory Over Cal

Game Recap
- Ohio State got off to a quick start and never looked back. It took lefty Landon Beidelschies just eight pitches to get through the top of the first inning, with the Bears going three up, three down.
- Trey Lipsey walked to lead-off the bottom of the first, followed by a single from Henry Kaczmar. Matthew Graveline doubled to right center, sending both runners home to put the Buckeyes ahead early, 2-0. With one out, Mitchell Okuley walked, and Joseph Mershon reached base on catcher's interference. A sacrifice fly from Josh Stevenson scored Graveline and put Ohio State ahead, 3-0, going into the second inning.
- In the bottom of the third, Graveline led off with an infield single. Tyler Pettorini reached on a fielder's choice, followed by walks from Okuley and Mershon to load the bases. Stevenson reached base on a fielder's choice and Pettorini scored, putting the Buckeyes ahead by four, 4-0. With bases still loaded, Zach Fjelstad drew a walk, scoring Okuley to extend the Ohio State lead, 5-0. Lipsey stepped up to the plate next, hitting a stand-up triple that cleared the bases and gave the Buckeyes a commanding 8-0 lead over Cal.
- Beidelschies continued to dominate on the mound, not allowing any Cal hits through the first three and a half innings of play.
- Cal got on the board in the top of the sixth, scoring on a solo home run and an RBI single to cut the Buckeye lead to six, 8-2.
- With two outs on the board in the home half of the sixth inning, Pettorini singled to center field. Okuley was up next, and he landed a hard-hit ball in center field to plate Pettorini and put the Buckeyes ahead by seven, 9-2.
- Another solo home run and an RBI groundout from the Bears in the top of the eighth added two more runs to their score, but the Buckeyes still had the lead, 9-4.
- Blaine Wynk tossed the final inning for the Buckeyes, fanning two of four batters faced and securing the 9-4 victory for Ohio State.
- Beidelschies (2-1) struck out a career-high eight batters in 6.0 innings pitched. He allowed two runs on four hits.
- Zach Brown and Wynk each struck out two in appearances out of the bullpen.
- Graveline led the Buckeyes in hits with two.
- Lipsey had a team-high three RBIs and Graveline and Stevenson each batted in two runs.
- Pettorini led the team in runs scored with two.
- Graveline and Mershon each had one stolen base.
- The Buckeyes play two more games in Las Vegas, taking on Pitt on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET and Oklahoma on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
