
Ohio State Defeated by Cal Poly in Series Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Ohio State baseball team (7-7) was defeated by Cal Poly (7-8), 3-1, on Monday night in the teams' series finale. The Mustangs came away with the series win, winning three out of four games against the Buckeyes.

- The Mustangs got on the board first, scoring on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
- Joseph Mershon had the first hit of the game for the Buckeyes, doubling to left center in the top of the second and then swiping the bag at third, but he was stranded on base.
- Cal Poly took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second after scoring on a fielder's choice and a Buckeye error.
- Henry Kaczmar singled up the middle to lead off the fourth inning and advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts, but he was left on base.
- Mitchell Okuley doubled to left field to open the fifth inning for the Buckeyes, but there was nothing else doing for Ohio State in the top half as they remained behind the Mustangs, 3-0.
- In the top of the sixth, Matthew Graveline hit a two-out triple down the right field line. The Buckeyes, however, were not able to capitalize and he was stranded on base.
- With one out on the board in the top of the seventh stanza, Okuley singled up the middle, but he was once again left on base.
- In the top of the eighth, Mason Eckelman led off with his first collegiate hit, a double to left field. With one out on the board, an RBI groundout from Kaczmar scored pinch runner Nolan Farley to cut the Cal Poly lead to two, 3-1.
- The Buckeyes, however, were not able to get ahead of the Mustangs as they were retired in order in the ninth inning.
- Okuley led the Buckeyes with two hits on the night.
- Kaczmar, who had one hit, is on a 13-game hitting streak.
- Chase Herrell (0-1) took the loss on the hill. He struck out two and allowed three runs on seven hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
- Gavin DeVooght and Zach Brown each made strong appearances out of the bullpen. DeVooght struck out one and did not allow any runs or hits in 2.0 innings and Brown did not allow any runs and gave up just one hit in 2.0 innings pitched.
- The Buckeyes wrap up their West Coast swing with a midweek game at Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, March 13 at 9:00 p.m. ET.
