No. 4 UCLA Earns 3-0 Win Over Buckeyes Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 8 Ohio State (15-5) finished the 2024 Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge with a 3-0 setback at No. 4 UCLA (16-4) Sunday at Pauley Pavilion.

The teams met earlier this year in Austin, Texas, with Ohio State earning a 3-2 win. Â

On Sunday, Ohio State fell by scores of 23-25, 16-25, 20-25.

Jacob Pasteur led the Buckeyes with 13 kills. Shane Wetzel added 11 and Kyle Teune contributed 10. Setter Michael Wright finished with 29 assists with Teune leading with six digs. Â

How it Happened

Set 1
The Buckeyes took a 4-2 lead on kills by Shane Wetzel and Kyle Teune. The lead increased to 7-4 Buckeyes after a 3-0 Ohio State run. The Bruins called their first timeout of the set but the Buckeyes kept their lead at three after another Teune kill to make it 10-7. UCLA used a 3-1 run to cut into the Ohio State lead before a Wetzel kill made it 13-11 Ohio State. The Bruins then used a 3-0 run to take the lead at 14-13. Ohio State called one of its timeouts and then tied it at 15-all on a Michael Wright kill. UCLA then used a 3-1 run for an 18-16 advantage. A pair of Wetzel kills put Ohio State back on top at 20-19. The Buckeyes used their final timeout after the Bruins went up 22-21 after a 3-1 run. A UCLA error tied the set at 22-all after the break. The Bruins then called their final timeout after Jacob Pasteur and Cole Young put the Buckeyes up 23-22 after a block. UCLA then scored the next three to win the opener 25-23. Wetzel had seven kills while the Buckeyes hit .409 overall.

Consecutive Pasteur kills evened the set at 2-all early. The teams traded points before the Bruins went up 8-5 after a 4-1 run. After a pair of Ohio State errors to start the set, 11 of the next 12 points in the set were scored on kills. Ohio State called a timeout after UCLA took a 10-6 lead after a 5-1 run. The Bruins built the lead to 14-8 to force another Buckeyes timeout. The Buckeyes could get no closer the rest of the way in dropping the set, 25-16. Wetzel upped his match-high total with 11 kills.

Teune put the Buckeyes up 3-2 early with a kill. A Teune ace made it 5-2 Buckeyes before the Bruins went on a 6-2 run to go up 8-7. The Buckeyes stayed close but UCLA kept the lead the rest of the way to win the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
