No. 8 Ohio State Drops 3-1 MIVA Match to Ball State

The teams will complete the season series next Thursday in Muncie, Indiana.
Ohio State fell by scores of 32-34, 25-15, 22-25, 24-26.
Shane Wetzel led the Buckeyes with 22 kills. Jacob Pasteur added 11 and Kyle Teune, 10.
Noah Platfoot subbed in at setter in the first set when starter Michael Wright left with an injury. Platfoot then recorded his 2,000th career assist. He finished with 43.
Thomas Poole posted a career best 18 digs.
How it Happened
Set 1
A Shane Wetzel kill and Ball State error got the Buckeyes out to a 2-0 advantage. A Jacob Pasteur kill and ace followed by another Wetzel kill improved the lead to 5-1 Buckeyes. Consecutive kills by Kyle Teune and a Cardinals error made it 8-2 Ohio State. Ball State called timeout and scored the next two points before a service error made it 9-4 Buckeyes. A 3-1 Ball State run before a Pasteur kill kept the Buckeyes on top 11-7. The Buckeyes called timeout after the Cardinals cut it to 13-12. Ball State tied it at 13-all after the break and took the lead at 16-13 on a pair of Ohio State errors and a kill. Ohio State called its final timeout of the set and scored the next two points, the latter on a Wetzel kill to make it 16-15 Cardinals. Ball State increased its lead to 20-16 before the Buckeyes used a 4-0 run to tie it at 21-all. Ball State called timeout and took the lead at 23-21. A Pasteur kill and Ohio State block (Wetzel and Justin Howard) tied it at 23-all. Pasteur evened it at 24-all with a kill from the right side before a Teune kill put Ohio State up 25-24. Ball State tied it before a Wetzel kill put the Buckeyes back on top, 26-25. Ball State took the lead before another Pasteur blast tied it at 28 all. The Buckeyes took the lead on a Ball State error and after Ball state tied it, Ohio State regained the lead on a Cardinals service error, 30-29. Ball State scored the next two before a Teune rocket from the back row tied it at 31-all. The Cardinals then won it, 34-32 with a 3-1 run to end it. Wetzel led Ohio State with eight kills in the opener.

Set 2
Ohio State again jumped out to an early lead at 4-1 behind a pair of Wetzel kills. The Buckeyes built the lead to 12-7 after a 5-1 run leading to a Ball State timeout. A Ball State error and Cole Young kill from the middle put Ohio State up 15-9. The Cardinals got the next two points before a Ball State service error kept the Buckeyes up 16-11. An Ohio State triple block (Platfoot, Pasteur, Young) led to another Ball State timeout with the Buckeyes leading 17-11. A Wetzel kill and Young ace made it 19-13 Buckeyes. Wetzel delivered after a long rally for a 20-13 Ohio State lead. The Buckeyes scored the next four for set point at 24-14 and then won it on a Ball State service error, 25-15. Ohio State finished the set on a 5-1 run. Wetzel upped his team lead with 12 kills as the Buckeyes evened the match at 1-all.

Set 3
After Ball State took a 9-8 lead, the Buckeyes used a 4-1 run to go up 12-10. The Cardinals then took a 15-13 lead after a 5-1 run. Wetzel brought Ohio State to within one at 19-18 with a kill. The Cardinals went up 22-20 before an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes got the next point on a Howard kill before a Ball State timeout with the Cardinals leading, 22-21. Ball State scored three of the next four points to win it, 25-22.

Set 4
Ball State started with a 6-2 lead before an Ohio State timeout. A Pasteur kill capped a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 9-7 Cardinals. The Buckeyes mounted a rally to cut the Ball State lead to 14-12 on consecutive Wetzel kills. The Cardinals scored the next two before an Ohio State timeout with the Buckeyes trailing 16-12. The Buckeyes cut it to 18-16 after a 4-1 run. The Cardinals scored the next two before a Teune kill made it 20-17 Cardinals. Ohio State made it 23-22 Ball State on a Cardinals error and a Teune ace. Ball State called timeout before an Ohio State service error let to match point. Young and Wetzel then tied it at 24-all with consecutive kills. The Cardinals went up 25-24 with a kill and won it on an Ohio State error, 26-24.
