
Buckeyes Fall to Boston College on Opening Day

Game Recap
- Southpaw Landon Beidelschies got off to a strong start in the top of the first, fanning two of the three batters he faced.
- In the bottom of the first, Trey Lipsey hit a lead-off triple to center field and then scored on a wild pitch to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Henry Kaczmar and Matthew Graveline drew back-to-back walks and advanced to second and third on a groundout from Tyler Pettorini, but the runners were stranded as the next two batters struck out.
- Boston College took the lead in the top of the second inning, 2-1, after a two-RBI double.
- A solo home run for the Eagles in the top half of the third frame left the Buckeyes trailing by two runs, 3-1.
- The Buckeyes answered in the bottom of the third inning. With one out on the board, Graveline was walked. Pettorini was next at the plate, and he singled to right field, advancing the speedy Graveline to third base to put runners on the corners. Joseph Mershon, making his Ohio State debut, singled to center field, driving Graveline home to bring the Buckeyes within one run of the Eagles, 3-2.
- Beidelschies made quick work of the Eagles in the top of the fourth, catching two of the three batters he faced looking.
- The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning, when Boston College extended its lead, 5-2, after a solo home run and a score on a Buckeye error.
- The Buckeyes turned a double play in the top of the seventh inning, but there was nothing doing for them in the bottom of the frame.
- A homerun, an RBI single, a sacrifice fly and a score on an error gave the Eagles a 9-2 lead over Ohio State in the top of the eighth inning.
- The Buckeyes went scoreless for the remainder of the game, falling to the Eagles by the final score of 9-2.
- Beidelschies (0-1) fanned a career-high six batters in 4.0 innings tossed. He took the loss on the mound, allowing three earned runs on three hits.
- Lipsey, Pettorini and Mershon each had one hit for the Buckeyes and Mershon batted in one run.
- Graveline and Lipsey each scored one run.
- Lipsey, Graveline and Josh Stevenson each swiped one bag.
- The Buckeyes face BYU at 7:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 17 and USC on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m. ET.
