Buckeyes in Action in South Carolina

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's tennis team opened its fall slate at the Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic over the weekend in Greenville, S.C. Play was outdoors the first two days, before inclement weather moved the final day's action indoors. The tournament included four doubles and 10 singles flights. Two rounds of doubles were held Friday, with a third round on Saturday, and one singles round was held each day.

Graduate student Akanksha Bhan led the Buckeyes with a 3-0 mark in singles, capturing the Flight 9 title. Irina Cantos Siemers, Sydni Ratliff, Shelly Bereznyak, Luciana Perry, Madeline Atway and Teah Chavez each picked up two singles victories, as did the doubles tandem of Chavez and Atway. True freshmen Perry, Chavez, Alessia Cau and Audrey Spencer, along with redshirt freshman Megan Basil, all posted their first collegiate singles wins. Spencer, Chavez and Perry were also each part of at least one doubles victory.

Final Draws

Day One (Friday)
The doubles tandem of freshman Luciana Perry and Dani Schoenly posted a first-round win before falling in the second round. The duos of Audrey Spencer and Shelly Bereznyak and Teah Chavez and Madeline Atway both fell in round one before rebounding with a consolation victory.

Two freshmen – Perry and Chavez – picked up their first collegiate singles victories. Graduate student Akanksha Bhan also posted a first-round victory and Bereznyak advanced after her opponent defaulted. Six of the Buckeyes' 11 matches went to a third set, including the wins from Chavez and Bhan.

Day Two (Saturday)
Luciana Perry and Akanksha Bhan advanced to their respective flight championships with their second wins of the tournament, as both won in straight sets. Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff both picked up consolation victories.

Day Three (Sunday)
Akanksha Bhan ended the tournament as the Flight 9 champion, posting a third straight win, including back-to-back straight-set victories. Freshman Luciana Perry dropped her match in the Flight 4 championship in three sets.

True freshmen Alessia Cau and Audrey Spencer and redshirt freshman Megan Basil all posted their first collegiate singles victories Sunday. Irina Cantos Siemers, Sydni Ratliff, Madeline Atway and Teah Chavez also notched victories on the final day.
