IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ohio State baseball team (22-25, 5-15 Big Ten) was defeated by the Iowa Hawkeyes (34-11, 10-6 Big Ten), 15-3, in the second game of the teams' three-game series on Saturday.
Game Recap
- Tyler Pettorini had the first hit of the game for the Buckeyes, leading off with a single in the second. He advanced to second on a throwing error by the Hawkeye pitcher. Nick Erwin drew a walk to put two runners on base for Ohio State with just one out on the board. The Hawkeyes, however, turned a double play to end the top half and keep the Buckeyes scoreless.
- Hank Thomas led off with a solo homerun way over the fence in left field in the third inning to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead over Iowa.
- In the bottom of the third, an RBI double from the Hawkeyes tied the score, 1-1, and a three-run homerun gave them the lead, 4-1.
- Cole Andrews singled up the middle to lead off the fourth frame. Pettorini reached on a fielder's choice and, with one out, Mitchell Okuley and Erwin were both walked to load the bases for the Buckeyes. Pettorini scored on a wild pitch to cut the Hawkeye lead to two, 4-2.
- A two-run homerun from the Hawkeyes in the bottom of the fourth inning, however, to extend their lead, 6-2.
- Trey Lipsey was hit by a pitch to open the fifth and advanced to second on a wild pitch to get into scoring position. Matthew Graveline was next at the plate and he was walked and both runners advanced on a groundout. Andrews was also walked to load the bases for Ohio State, but Iowa once again turned a double play to get out of the inning.
- An RBI triple and a two-run homerun from Iowa in the bottom of the fifth gave the Hawkeyes a seven-run lead over the Buckeyes, 9-2. The Hawkeyes added another run in the sixth to get ahead, 10-2.
- In the top of the seventh, Lipsey was walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third base on back-to-back wild pitches. An RBI single from Marcus Ernst sent Lipsey home and put the Buckeyes within seven runs of Iowa, 10-3.
- Pettorini was hit by a pitch to reach base in the top of the eighth. Okuley was next up and he singled up the middle, advancing Pettorini to third to put runners on the corners. Okuley stole second to get into scoring position, but there was nothing else doing for Ohio State as the runners were left on base.
- Five more runs scored for the Hawkeyes in the eighth to extend their lead to 12, 15-3.
- In the top of the ninth, Graveline had a hard-hit single for the Buckeyes with one out on the board, but the Hawkeyes secured the finals outs and the 15-3 win.
