IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ohio State baseball team (23-25, 6-15 Big Ten) was victorious in its series finale with Iowa (34-12, 10-7 Big Ten) on Sunday, defeating the Hawkeyes, 5-2, to precent a series sweep.
Game Recap
- The Buckeyes turned two double plays early in the game, with one to get out of the first and one to get the first two outs in the second. The Hawkeyes, however, took a 1-0 lead in the second after a solo homerun.
- Henry Kaczmar had the first hit of the game for Ohio State, singling to right center in the top of the third frame. Hank Thomas followed that up with a single to the same spot, advancing Kaczmar to third to put runners on the corners. Trey Lipsey was next up and was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Buckeyes. Matthew Graveline walked, sending Kaczmar home to tie the score, 1-1.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Logan Jones took over on the mound with one out on the board and runners on the corners. Jones was a spark, fanning both batters he faced to strand the Hawkeye runners.
- An RBI single from the Hawkeyes in the bottom of the fifth put them back ahead of the Buckeyes by one, 2-1.
- In the top of the sixth, a solo homerun from Pettorini, his third homer of the season, tied the score once again, 2-2.
- Erwin walked to open the seventh and moved to second base on a groundout. With two outs, Lipsey was hit by another pitch to get on base. An RBI single from Graveline gave the Buckeyes their first lead of the game, 3-2. Lipsey advanced to third on Graveline's single and Graveline stole second to put two runners in scoring position. The bases were quickly loaded for Ohio State after Marcus Ernst drew a walk. Cole Andrews also walked, scoring Lipsey to put the Buckeyes up by two, 4-2. Pettorini was up next, and he walked as well, sending Graveline across home plate to extend the Ohio State lead to three, 5-2.
- A beauty of a bunt from Kaczmar, a walk from Thomas and a bloop single to shallow left field from Lipsey loaded the bases for the Buckeyes in the top of the eighth, but all three were left on base as the Hawkeyes were able to get out of the inning unscathed.
- Landon Beidelschies came in to close things out for the Buckeyes; he struck out one as the Hawkeyes went down in order and Ohio State secured the 5-2 victory.
