
No. 13 Buckeyes Earn MIVA Title, Sweep No. 10 Loyola, 3-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 13 Ohio State (19-9, 11-3) earned a share of the 2023 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association regular-season title and kept its win streak alive at eight-consecutive matches with a 3-0 sweep over visiting No. 10 Loyola Chicago (21-6, 11-3) Saturday at the Covelli Center.
The last time Ohio State earned a regular-season MIVA title was a co-championship in 2018. The Buckeyes have won or shared 28 MIVA regular-season titles.
The Buckeyes are the No. 3 seed in the upcoming MIVA Tournament and will play host to No. 6 seed Lindenwood at 5 p.m. April 15 at the Covelli Center.
Ohio State last won seven or more in a row during the 2018 season when the Buckeyes rattled off nine-consecutive wins from March 2-April 6. Ohio State finished 25-6 that season while advancing to the NCAA Championship match vs. Long Beach State (L, 1-3).
Jacob Pasteur and Shane Wetzel led the Buckeyes with nine kills each. Michael Wright led the Buckeyes with 30 assists while Jack Stevens was the match leader with 11 digs.
Pasteur owns the No. 16 spot all-time at Ohio State with 1,009 career kills. He has 383 this year in 27 matches.

How it Happened
Set 1
Loyola Chicago scored the first two points before the Buckeyes tied it on kills from Cole Young and Michael Wright. The squads then traded points until the Ramblers took an 11-9 lead. The Buckeyes quickly responded with the next three points to make it 12-11 Buckeyes. Loyola Chicago then used a 4-0 run to build an 18-15 lead before an Ohio State timeout. The Buckeyes then went on a quick 3-1 run to cut the lead to 20-18 Ramblers, prompting a Loyola Chicago timeout. Ohio State called its final timeout with the Ramblers leading 22-19. Ohio State tied the set at 24-all on a Shane Wetzel down the right side. Loyola Chicago then called its final timeout. The Buckeyes took the lead at 27-26 on a Wetzel and Young block and then again 28-27 on a Ramblers error. Young then got the set-winning kill (29-27) to give the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead in the match.

Set 2
The Ramblers jumped to a 6-2 lead before the Buckeyes rallied to tie it at 10-all after a 5-1 run. The set went back-and-forth with Ohio State taking its first lead at 15-14 on a Jack Stevens kill. Loyola called timeout and reclaimed the lead at 17-16. Ohio State called a timeout after the Ramblers went up 21-19 after a 3-1 run. The Buckeyes then took a 22-21 lead after a quick 3-0 run. Loyola Chicago called timeout after a Wright ace put the Buckeyes in the lead. Ohio State called timeout after the Ramblers took a 25-24 lead. A Loyola Chicago service error tied it at 25-all before another Rambler error put Ohio State up 26-25. A Stevens kill made it 27-26 Buckeyes before Ohio State took the set 28-26 on a Rambler error to go up 2-0 in the match.

Set 3
Again, Loyola Chicago took an early lead at 3-0. The Buckeyes then tied it a 6-all after a 4-1 run. The Ramblers countered with a 4-1 run of their own for a 10-7 lead. Young and Stevens combined for a block before a solo block by Wright tied the match at 12-all after a 3-1 Buckeye run. A Jacob Pasteur kill ended a 3-1 Ohio State run that put the Buckeyes on top 18-17. Loyola Chicago called timeout before the Buckeyes used a 3-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. After another Rambler timeout the Buckeyes used one of their own after Loyola Chicago tied the set at 21-all. A Pasteur kill led to set point with the Buckeyes before the Buckeyes won 25-23 after a Rambler error.
