Buckeyes Advance to MIVA Semifinals with 3-0 Win over Lindenwood

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3-seed Ohio State (20-9, 11-3) advanced in 2023 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament with a 3-0 win over No. 6 seed Lindenwood (10-13) Saturday at the Covelli Center. Ohio State will host No. 7 McKendree next Wednesday (7 p.m./B1G+).
Shane Wetzel led the Buckeyes with 17 kills and eight digs while Jacob Pasteur added 14 kills. Jack Stevens also tied for the team lead with eight digs.
Senior Michael Wright finished with 45 assists to move in to the Top 10 in career assists at Ohio State. He now has 1,709 for his career. Sanil Thomas (2016-19) is No. 9 with 2,216.
The win Saturday gave the Buckeyes a nine-match win streak, the longest since the Buckeyes won nine consecutive matches in 2018.

How it Happened
Set 1
Shane Wetzel, the MIVA newcomer of the year, got the Buckeyes started with a kill to open the match. Ohio State started with a 3-0 lead before Lindenwood went on a 4-0 run. The teams began to trade points until the Lions took an 18-16 lead with the first back-to-back points since it was 8-7 Lindenwood. Ohio State called timeout and tied it at 21-all on a Jacob Pasteur solo block. The Buckeyes took the lead, 22-21 on a Lindenwood blocking error, their first lead since it was 8-7. Lindenwood called timeout after a Wetzel kill made it 24-23 Buckeyes. The Buckeyes then got the win on a Lions error, 25-23. The Buckeyes hit .423 with Pasteur, the MIVA Player of the Year, leading with seven kills. With 14 assists in the opener, Michael Wright moved into the Top 10 in career assists at Ohio State.

Set 2
Lindenwood used a 3-0 run to take an 8-5 lead in the second. The Buckeyes made it 13-12 Lions on a Justin Howard kill and then tied it at 13-all on a Wetzel blast on the right side. A Howard and Wetzel block put Ohio State on top 14-13. Lindenwood took a timeout after a Lions error gave the Buckeyes a 17-15 lead. Wetzel started the set back up with an ace for an 18-15 lead. Ohio State built the lead to 21-17 with a triple block (Pasteur, Wright, Howard). The Lions then cut it to 22-21 Buckeyes, leading to an Ohio State timeout. Lindenwood called timeout at set point after a Howard kill made it 24-22 Buckeyes. Cole Young then got the set-winning kill to give the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead. Paster (11) and Wetzel (10) led both teams in kills after two sets. The Buckeyes hit .353 in the second.

Set 3
A Wright ace gave the Buckeyes a 6-4 lead before a Jack Stevens kill on an overpass made it 10-7 Buckeyes. A Wetzel kill led to a Lions timeout with the Buckeyes leading 13-9. Lindenwood took its final timeout of the set after a Lion error put the Buckeyes up 23-19. The Lions rallied to make it 24-23 Buckeyes after a 4-1 run. Ohio State called timeout and Wetzel got the match-winning kill (25-23) to send the Buckeyes to the MIVA semifinals.
