
Ohio State Drops Series Opener at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE Pa. – The Ohio State baseball team (20-18, 3-10 Big Ten) fell to Penn State (21-13, 3-7 Big Ten), 10-3, in the teams’ series opener on Friday night.
Game Recap
- After a brief 30-minute weather delay due to rain, Trey Lipsey led off the first with a single, but there was nothing else doing for the Buckeyes as they went scoreless in the top half.
- A grand slam from the Nittany Lions in the bottom of the first inning gave them an early 4-0 lead over Ohio State.
- Penn State added two more runs in the bottom of the third frame to extend its lead over the Buckeyes, 6-0.
- Ohio State hit three straight one-out singles in the top of the fifth, with one each from Mitchell Okuley, Lipsey and Kade Kern. Okuley scored on an RBI groundout from Tyler Pettorini to cut the Nittany Lion lead to five, 6-1.
- Penn State scored once in the bottom of the fifth to get back ahead by six, 7-1.
- Marcus Ernst singled to left field to lead off the sixth for the Buckeyes, but a double play from the Nittany Lions and a groundout kept Ohio State from adding more runs to its score.
- The Nittany Lions extended their lead over the Buckeyes, 9-1, in the bottom of the sixth.
- With one out on the board in the top of the seventh, Okuley singled through the left side. With two outs, Kern came up big, hitting a homerun over the wall in left field to cut the Penn State lead back to six, 9-3.
- In the bottom of the eighth, however, the Nittany Lions led off with a homerun to extend their lead to seven, 10-3. Penn State retired the Buckeyes in order in the ninth to earn the win.
Buckeyes by the Numbers
- Kern, Lipsey and Okuley led the Buckeyes in hits with two each. Lipsey is on an 11-game hitting streak.
- Kern had a team-high two RBIs and Okuley scored a team-high two runs.
- Gavin Bruni (2-2) took the loss on the mound. He struck out three and allowed six runs, five earned, on five hits in 3.0 innings pitched.
- Wyatt Loncar and Cole Pauley each struck out two in relief appearances.
