COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Ohio State women’s hockey team responded to its Friday night loss against No. 3 Minnesota in a big way, earning a 5-1 victory over the Gophers Saturday at Ridder Arena. The Buckeyes (25-3-2, 20-3-1 WCHA) had five different goal scorers and nine point scorers on top of a 32-save day from goaltender Amanda Thiele to defeat the Gophers (23-4-2, 20-3-2 WCHA).
How it Happened
- The Gophers were first to score again, lighting the lamp at 6:32 in the first period. But Amanda Thiele denied Minnesota for the rest of the game, keeping the Gophers to one goal on the day.
- Sloane Matthews was first on the board for the Buckeyes, scoring at 9:27 in the first period. Jenn Gardiner assisted the goal.
- Less than 20 seconds later, Hadley Hartmetz skated the puck down the ice and sent it into the slot trying to connect with one of her teammates rushing into the Gophers zone. Instead, the puck was deflected by a Gopher defenseman into the goal to put Ohio State up 2-1 at 9:46.
- At the end of the first period, Ohio State was leading Minnesota with a 14-7 shots on goal advantage and one-goal score advantage.
- Both teams were scoreless in the second period as Thiele put a stop to 16 Gopher shots.
- A Minnesota penalty at the end of the second frame gave Ohio State 24 seconds on the power play to start the third. As the penalty clock expired, Gabby Rosenthal scored on Minnesota goaltender Skylar Vetter to put the Buckeyes up 3-1 just 29 seconds into the period. She was assisted by Sophie Jaques and Gardiner.
- The Buckeyes did not let up with the two-goal lead in the third period. Paetyn Levis took advantage of a miscommunication behind the Gopher net by Vetter, stealing the puck off her stick and knocking it to Kenzie Hauswirth who finished on the open net at 14:23.
- Levis closed out the scoring for Ohio State at 15:31 with a goal off assists from Emma Maltais and Makenna Webster.
