VENICE, Fla. – It was a special night for the Buckeyes as they opened the season with a 3-0 victory over UCONN; it is the first collegiate win as a head coach for first-year skipper Bill Mosiello. Ohio State carried a no-hitter into the top of the sixth inning and held the Huskies, who advanced to last year’s NCAA Superregionals, to just four hits.
Game Recap
- Marcus Ernst picked up the first hit of the game for the Bucks in the bottom of the first frame, singling up the middle. Kade Kern was walked, putting runners on first and second, and a sac fly from Mitchell Okuley advanced Ernst to third. In his first at-bat as a Buckeye, catcher Cole Andrews singled right to the pitcher, scoring Ernst to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the second, Nick Erwin recorded his first hit of the game with a lead-off double, but there was nothing doing for the Buckeyes in the rest of the inning.
- Still ahead 1-0 in the fourth with two outs on the board, Erwin singled to right field. Henry Kaczmar made contact for the first hit of his collegiate career, singling down the left field line and advancing Erwin to third base. Kaczmar then swiped second to put two runners in scoring position, but the Buckeyes were not able to push any runs across.
- The Huskies went down in order in the top of the fifth frame; Isaiah Coupet struck out two looking and one swinging.
