Julie Rodijk scores twice as the Buckeyes win their 12th game of the season
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio Stare's offense awoke in the second half and lifted the No. 7 Buckeyes to a 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon over Kent State at Murphy-Mellis Field in Kent, Ohio. Ohio State improved to 12-3 on the season while Kent State is now 3-9.
The Short Story
The combination of Julie Rodijk and Makenna Webster teamed up on goals at the end of the third quarter and beginning of the fourth while Leanne Bough added in an insurance tally later in the fourth quarter to highlight the scoring on Sunday.
In goal, senior Abby Danson registered her second shutout of the season (she also has two combined shutouts) with three saves. Fifteen of the game's 19 total shots came from Ohio State, which also had a 4-2 edge on penalty corners.
How The Goals Were Scored
- With no score through the first 44 minutes, Rodijk changed that late in the third quarter as she took a pass from Webster and converted her seventh goal of the season. Two minutes in the fourth quarter, the same combo hooked up to make the score 2-0, as Rodijk finished her second multi-goal game of the season.
- Leanne Bough and Riley Hudson were the goal and assist pair on the final score of the game at the 52:48 mark. Bough now has 14 points on the season and 51 in her career.
Buckeye This and That
- In a scoreless first half, Ohio State outshot Kent State 7-2 and generated three penalty corners. Abby Danson made one save and an Ohio State opportunity was snuffed out by Kent State when Lauren Conroy made a defensive save on a Hallie Brost shot.
- Rodijk's two goals gives her 18 points on the season, which is tied with Brenna Bough for second-most on the team. Including 66 career games at UAlbany, Rodijk has 45 career points.
- Ohio State had a special fan in attendance on Sunday: newly inducted Ohio State Athletics Hall of Famer Yesenia Luces. Luces, a native of Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, was part of a 14-member class that was officially enshrined into the Hall of Fame on Friday and honored at halftime of yesterday's football game vs. Maryland.
- Makenna Webster's 38 points are the most by an Ohio State player in 13 years, since Aisling Coyle had 55 during the Buckeyes' run to the NCAA Final Four in 2010.
- Today's game was the 36th all-time between Ohio State and Kent State. The Buckeyes lead the series 27-9 and overall have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams.
- Ohio State's 12 wins are the most in a season since 2018 when they finished 12-8 overall.
- The Buckeyes are 8-1 this season against non-conference teams with one game remaining on its 2023 schedule: Oct. 22 at home vs. Bellarmine, which is also the final game of the regular season.
