Barker tallies twice for Ohio State
The Buckeyes never led until the final shot of the shootout to take the victory over the Blue Hens (1-3) and improve to 3-2 on the year.
How it Happened
- Each team recorded just one shot in the opening quarter. Ohio State had the first attempt as Senna Schot sent one wide at 7:28. Delaware earned the first penalty corner of the game and scored on the opportunity at 12:15 for a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes of play in Columbus.
- Down 1-0 entering the second half, Ohio State outscored Delaware 2-1 in the third quarter to even the game.
- The Buckeyes opened the second half with a penalty corner less than a minute into the stanza and it was Emily Barker who found the back of the cage at 30:51 off an assist from Phillippa Jowett for the team's first goal of the game.
- Delaware was quick to respond with a goal at 31:52 to take a 2-1 lead before Ohio State tied the contest again with a goal by Victoria Kutz at 43:39 to put the teams even at two at the end of the third.
- Both the Buckeyes and the Blue Hens scored in the final frame to send the game to overtime tied at three. Delaware tallied its third goal at 45:35 and Barker recorded her second of the day at 50:43, assisted by Laila Hollis, as Ohio State tied the game for the third time.
- Overtime wasn't enough to decide the ninth meeting between Ohio State and Delaware. Buckeye goalie Avery Alleva made a save in extra time to keep the game alive.
- The Buckeyes won the five-round shootout, 3-2. After a scoreless first round, Buckeye Autum Kernechel tallied in the second. Delaware opened round three with a goal, answered by Barker. The fourth round was scoreless. The Blue Hens evened the shootout with the first attempt in round five, but Schot had the response to lift the Buckeyes to the victory.
- Emily Barker scored twice in the game for her first career multi-goal performance. She is the second Buckeye this season to score twice in a game.
- The Buckeyes scored a season-high three goals in Friday's contest.
- Avery Alleva ended the game with six saves for the Buckeyes.
- Delaware outshot Ohio State, 17-14, in the game, but the Buckeyes had the edge in the fourth quarter, 4-1.
Ohio State finishes the weekend against Cornell at noon Sunday at Buckeye Varsity Field. Admission is free.
