Competition Underway in ITA Midwest Regional Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's tennis team traveled to East Lansing, Mich., for the ITA Midwest Regional Championships, which started with qualifying singles Thursday and included singles and doubles main draw competition through Monday.

Irina Cantos Siemers and Luciana Perry ended the tournament as the doubles runner-up, falling to a team from Michigan in the final Monday, 8-7 (3). Cantos Siemers reached the singles semifinal round before dropping a three-set match to Wolverine Kari Miller in the final four.

Tournament Central/Draws

Doubles
Three of four Buckeye doubles teams posted two wins on the opening day to reach the Round of 16. The No. 5-8 seeded duos of Sydni Ratliff/Shelly Bereznyak and Luciana Perry/Irina Cantos Siemers both advanced, as did the No. 9-16 seeded tandem of Akanksha Bhan/Audrey Spencer.

The Ohio State duo of Perry and Cantos Siemers notched three more wins to reach the final, including downing the No. 4 and No. 2 seeds in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. In Monday's championship match, Perry and Cantos Siemers fell to Michigan's Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller, 8-7 (3). The Buckeye tandem held a 5-2 lead before the Wolverines won back to back games to draw within one (5-4). Ohio State broke on the no-ad point in the next game for a 6-4 lead but Michigan answered with its own break (on the no-ad point) and a hold to get back on serve. Each team held to send the match to a tiebreaker. The Wolverines won the first four points and Ohio State was unable to come back.

Singles
The event started with Teah Chavez posting two straight-set wins in qualifying to reach the 64-player main draw. The Buckeyes picked up three wins in singles on day one of main draw action. No. 2 seed Irina Cantos Siemers dropped just three games for a first-round win. Chavez was a straight-set winner and Shelly Bereznyak, a 5-8 seed, prevailed in three sets. Sydni Ratliff, the No. 4 seed, battled to force a third set but lost in a tiebreaker, and Akanksha Bhan and Audrey Spencer also fell in three sets. Luciana Perry and Madeline Atway dropped straight-set matches.

Saturday, Cantos Siemers moved on to the quarterfinals with two straight-set wins. Chavez notched her fourth win of the tournament in the Round of 32, but then fell in the Round of 16 in three sets. Bereznyak was a straight-set winner in the second round before falling in a close three-set decision.

In the quarterfinals Sunday, Cantos Siemers rallied to defeat Northwestern's Christina Hand, a No. 9-16 seed, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. In Monday's semifinal against No. 3 seed Kari Miller of Michigan, Cantos Siemers dropped the first set, 6-4. She was down in the second but came back for a 6-4 win to force a third set. The Buckeye was up a break early but Miller broke for a 4-3 lead and took the final two games for the set and the match.
