COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will travel to Morgantown, West Virginia for a three-game series with the Mountaineers starting on Friday at noon, weather permitting. While originally scheduled to play one game each on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the Saturday game has been moved onto the Friday slate in anticipation of inclimate weather over the weekend. Game One will begin Friday at noon, with the second game of the doubleheader planned to start 40 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Game Three is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m.Â
Ohio State has an all-time record of 15-10Â against West Virginia, last playing them in 2014 when they fell in an away matchup in Morgantown. The two teams met over a century ago for their first all-time matchup in the year 1900. Â
The OpponentÂ
- The Mountaineers have gotten off to an 8-4 start in the 2022 season, last playing on Tuesday in a 5-4 extra-inning win against Rider at home. Â
- Victor Scott II has gotten off to a hot start at the plate, batting .357 with a 1.122 OPS in 12 games. Scott II leads the team with 17 RBI and three home runs, and has also drawn eight walks and scoring 12 runs on the year. Â
- Dayne Leonard and JJ Weatherholt are batting .382 and .354, respectively, each coming into the matchup with an OPS over .900 and having started every game for the Mountaineers.Â
- Catcher McGwire Holbrook leads the team with a .516 average. Â
- Freshman Grant Hussey is tied for the team lead with three home runs on the year. Â
- Freshman Michael Kilker has been lights-out in his five appearances out of the bullpen to this point, striking out ten batters over seven innings of work without allowing an earned run. He has a 2-0 record this season. Â
- Relievers Trent Hogdon, Daniel Ouderkirk, and Noah Short have combined for 16 strikeouts and only one earned run allowed in nine innings out of the bullpen in 2022. Â
Ohio State Quick HittersÂ
- Ohio State opened the year 3-1 at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla., in their first weekend, before travelling to Texas State in San Marcos, Texas, where they fell in all three games to the Bobcats. They now stand at 4-7. Â
- The Buckeyes got back in the win column last Sunday for the first time in two weeks, beating Army 12-7Â with a late-inning comeback that included a seven-run eighth that helped erase a two-run deficit. Zach Dezenzo, Trey Lipsey, and Drew Reckart each hit home runs, with Reckart hitting two on the day. Â
- Friday starter Isaiah Coupet was filthy on opening day, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out 11. He now has 27 strikeouts on the season over 14.1 innings pitched; his 16.75 strikeouts per nine innings is good enough for sixth in the nation and leads the Big Ten.Â
- The Buckeyes’ middle infielders, shortstop Zach Dezenzo and second baseman Drew Reckart, have combined for ten home runs on the young season with five each. They are ranked in the top-25 nationally and third in the Big Ten in that category. Â
- Leadoff hitter Marcus Ernst has been on on-base machine, reaching at a .538 clip and batting .425 over the Buckeye’s first three weeks, which places him in the top-five in the Big Ten for each statistic.Â
- Freshman Jake Johnson has had quite the start out of the pen, allowing just one run in 8.0 innings with 11 punchouts.Â
- Last weekend against Pitt was a big one for freshman infielder Tyler Pettorini, who capitalized on his first starts as a Buckeye. Pettorini was especially productive against Pitt on Saturday, going 3-4 with a run scored. Â
- The 15 runs vs. Marshall on opening day were the most in a season-opener since the Buckeyes scored 20 runs in the 1975 openerÂ
- Preseason NCBWA All-American closer TJ Brock collected his first save of the season against Indiana State in the first weekend, getting six outs with three Ks in the 9-8 win.Â
- The Buckeyes erased an 8-0 deficit in their second game against Indiana State in Port Charlotte, winning 9-8 after a five-run eighth inning.Â
- Ethan Hammerberg leads the Big Ten with six appearances on the mound in 2022.Â
