COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State men’s basketball team (2-0) captured a victory in the middle game of a season-opening three-game home stand, upending Charleston Southern (1-1), 82-56, on Thursday evening at Value City Arena.
The Scarlet and Gray saw four reach double figures, led by junior Zed Key’s double-double effort.
The Buccaneers scored the first bucket of the game prior to Ohio State rattling off a 23-4 run that spanned nearly eight minutes of game action. The Buckeye big man was indeed the Key in the opening stage as the center posted 13 points and six rebounds before taking a well-deserved break with the hosts up 23-6.
The first-half lead was never in doubt with Key’s first-half double-double pacing the attack. He totaled 10 boards (five offensive) to go along with his double-digit scoring effort. The double-double was the fourth of his career and his second in as many games this season.
Key is also the first Buckeye to notch a double-double in the first half since Kaleb Wesson tallied an 11-point, 11-rebound effort against UMass Lowell exactly three years ago (11/10/2019).
The Scarlet and Gray once again produced a balanced scoring effort, getting points from eight different players. Senior Justice Sueing totaled nine, while freshman Brice Sensabaugh notched eight off the bench and graduate Sean McNeil canned a pair of triples. As a team, Ohio State outrebounded Charleston Southern 25-14, while holding the Buccaneers to 29 percent shooting (9-of-31) in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second stanza, the Buckeye lead never dropped below 20, as Ohio State cruised to the finish line. Roddy Gayle Jr. and McNeil paced the second-half effort, scoring seven points, each.
For the game, four finished in double figures, led by Key’s 17. Sensabaugh tallied his second double-digit effort to begin his Buckeye career, posting 14 points. McNeil added 13, while Sueing posted 13 points and six rebounds. The Buckeyes dominated down low, outrebounding the Buccaneers 47-28 while holding a 30-point advantage in the paint (50-20).
Ohio State will be back in action on Wednesday, November 16, as they conclude its three-game home stand against Eastern Illinois. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip on the Big Ten Network.
