COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18-ranked Ohio State field hockey team went on the road and picked up a key Big Ten victory on Friday afternoon, knocking off Indiana, 2-1, at Deborah Tobias Field in Bloomington. With the win, the Buckeyes are 9-6 on the season (3-4 Big Ten) while Indiana falls to 8-9, 1-6.
The Short Story
Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Ohio State got a pair of timely goals in the second half – the first coming off a penalty corner from Leanne Bough and the second by leading scorer Sarah Charley – and then successfully defended a last-second IU penalty corner as time expired to earn the come-from-behind victory.
The final shot total on the afternoon was 10-9 in Ohio State's favor and Indiana had a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Goalie Abby Danson made three saves and the defense in front of her allowed just one Hoosier shot on goal in the second half.
How It Happened
- Indiana finished off a penalty corner late in the first quarter to take a 1-0 lead. The goal was created when Sydney Held cleaned up a rebound in front of the goal.
- The score came with 3:35 remaining in the first quarter. Indiana held on to that lead for the remainder of the half and limited the Buckeyes to just two total shots in the second quarter.
- Late in the third quarter, Leanne Bough made good on an Ohio State penalty corner when she netted her fifth goal of the season. Delaney Lawler and Janneke van Stiphout were credited with assists on the play.
- What proved to be the game-winning goal was scored midway through the fourth quarter, and it came from Charley. In a transition opportunity, her first shot was blocked but she stayed with it and pushed the rebound past IU keeper Arabella Loveridge.
