
Webster’s Hat Trick Guides Ohio State over Bellarmine, 5-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 18 Ohio State field hockey team continued its winning ways on Sunday, wrapping up a 2-0 weekend with a 5-1 non-conference win at Bellarmine. The Buckeyes are now 10-6 on the season while Bellarmine falls to 4-13.
The Short Story
The Buckeyes opened up a close game in the third quarter, scoring three times to take a 4-1 lead. The offensive star of the afternoon was Makenna Webster, who scored three times. Two of her goals came in the third quarter and she completed her day in the fourth quarter with an unassisted tally for the final 5-1 margin. Grace Kim, a graduate student, had three assists on the day.
Ohio State was dominant on the offensive end of the field, outshooting Bellarmine 26-6 and out-cornering the Knights 16-3. Goalkeeper Abby Danson made three saves.
How It Happened
- Leanne Bough opened the scoring eight minutes into the first quarter, finishing off a penalty corner opportunity that was assisted by Grace Kim and Zella Bailey. It was Bough's second penalty corner goal of the weekend.
- Bellarmine tied the game at 1-1 2:45 into the third quarter, but from there it was all Buckeyes. Webster scored the first of her three goals less than two minutes later off a pass from Emma Goldean.
- At the 42:01 mark, Webster made the score 3-1 in favor of Ohio State with an assist to Kim, her second of the day.
- Just before the end of the third quarter, Delaney Lawler found the back of the cage for a 4-1 Buckeye lead. The score was assisted by Kim, her third of the day.
- Webster closed out the scoring at the 46:30 mark of the fourth quarter and completed her hat trick. She now has six goals on the season.

Buckeye This and That
- Sunday was the first-ever meeting between Ohio State and Bellarmine.
- The Knights had faced two other Big Ten teams prior to today's game with the Buckeyes: Sept. 11 vs. Indiana and Sept. 18 vs. Michigan State.
- With the win, the Buckeyes improved to 4-3 in true road games this season and 5-3 away from home.
- Sunday's game was a homecoming for sophomore midfielder Claudia Thomas. Thomas is from Louisville and attended Christian Academy of Louisville where she was named Ms. Kentucky Field Hockey following her senior season.
- The Buckeyes have won seven of their last eight games and scored two or more goals in each of the wins.
- Ohio State also reached the 10-win mark for the third time in six seasons under head coach Jarred Martin.
- Webster is the first Ohio State player with a hat trick since Mackenzie Allessie vs. Indiana in the spring of 2021.
What's Next
Ohio State has its final weekend of the regular season on tap Oct. 28-30. On Friday, it meets Michigan in Ann Arbor in the final Big Ten game of the season before closing out the regular season home schedule vs. Ball State on Sunday.
