Buckeyes Top Memphis in Wolstein Classic Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State opened the fall 2021 season Friday in the annual Wolstein Classic with a 3-2 win over visiting Memphis at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Each team scored on a penalty kick in the first half. The Buckeyes scored a couple quick goals in the second 45 to claim the win.
How it Happened
Ohio State put the first goal of the season on the board in the eighth minute on a penalty kick by sophomore captain Laurence Wootton. Memphis answered with a penalty kick of its own to tie the game at 1-all in the 11”. Following a 31-minute weather delay, the teams entered the halftime break tied at 1-all.
Wootton scored his second of the game in the 53rd and Xavier Green added his first of the season and third of his career in the 64th to put the Buckeyes ahead for good 3-1.
- Parker Grinstead passed to Wootton leading to the first goal of the year. Wootton’s score was his second of his career.
- The game was halted at 7:33 p.m. in the 26” because of lightening in the area. The game resumed at 8:04 p.m.
- Wootton found the left side of the net for his second of the game and third career in the 53rd. Connor DesRoches was credited with the assist.
- Senior Xavier Green, one of the preseason Big Ten Players to Watch, scored on a header in the 64’. Redshirt junior Chris Dowling earned the assist.
- This year marks the 15th season in which the Wolstein Classic has been held on the Ohio State campus. The Buckeyes are 22-14-7 all-time in the event.
- Ohio State holds a 118-65-31 record in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium since the facility opened in 1999.
- The Buckeyes are 2-0-0 vs. Memphis and are meeting UAB for the first time.

Notes
- Several Buckeyes played for the first time in Scarlet and Gray. Nathan Demian earned his first career start while Anthony Samways and Chris Dowling saw action for the first time.
- Grinstead was the last Buckeye to score twice in a game. He did so vs. Northwestern March 7 in a 4-2 OSU win in Columbus.
- Sophomore Connor DesRoches notched his first career assist on Wootton’s second goal and redshirt junior Chris Dowling assisted on Green’s goal. Both assists were career firsts.
- In the first game of the 2021 Wolstein Classic, Dayton took a 2-1 lead into halftime over UAB and finished out the game with a 5-1 win.
