COLUMBUS, Ohio – Last weekend was a big weekend for the Ohio State baseball team with a sweep of then league-leading Indiana. Two of its leaders, Zach Dezenzo and Seth Lonsway, were recognized by the Big Ten as the Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Dezenzo, a junior Alliance, Ohio, hit .533 (8-of-15) with two home runs over the weekend. He had a four-hit game in the series finale, including the game-winning walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth. Dezenzo scored the tying run in the bottom of the eighth and then delivered the hit to score the winning run in the ninth. He finished with four RBI and three scored runs in the four games.
For the season, Dezenzo has raised his batting average to .310 and has five doubles, three homers and a triple. He has hit safely in seven of the last nine games and is hitting .419 with three home runs and three doubles over that stretch.
Lonsway had a special day in the 6-0 win in game one on Saturday. He struck out a career-high 17 Hoosiers in a seven inning, complete game, two-hit shutout. He threw just 95 pitches and remarkably, just four outs in the game did not come via the strikeout.
The Celina, Ohio native is third in the conference and 15th nationally at 14.31 strikeouts per nine innings. He has been a bit up-and-down this year with his command, but on Saturday, in front of approximately 20 MLB scouts, he was in control and nearly untouchable.
As big as last weekend’s series was, this one coming up is just as big. The Buckeyes head north for a three-game series with rival Michigan in Ann Arbor. Ohio State is currently third in the Big Ten standings at 12-7 and Michigan is just a game in front of the Buckeyes at 13-6.
