COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team got back in the win column with a 3-0 victory over Ohio Tuesday night at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With their first shutout of the season, the Buckeyes improve to 10-14 overall, while the Bobcats drop to 11-12 overall in 2017.
“The biggest story for me today is that we got a victory in which we pitched the ball very well, and we used multiple guys to do it,” head coach Greg Beals said. “It was good to see Woodby give us the quality start in a controlled situation giving him 45 pitches so he would be available for the weekend. The whole pitching staff pitched very efficient for us tonight.”
Austin Woodby pitched four scoreless innings in a controlled start to improve to 2-0 on the year. The OSU bullpen registered five straight shutout innings to lead the Buckeyes to their first shutout win of the season. Right-handed reliever Seth Kinker claimed his third save of the season. At the plate, Dominic Canzone was 3-for-4 at the plate, while Jacob Barnwell drove in two runs and had a run scored.
BUCKEYES SCORE FIRST
Ohio State found a run in the bottom of the fourth when Jacob Barnwell stole third base and scored on a throwing error by the OU catcher. Barnwell reached on his second walk of the game and was moved over on a ground out by Jalen Washington.
EFFICIENT WOODBY
Ohio State starting pitcher Austin Woodby gave the boys four scoreless innings in his first start of the season. After allowing two singles in the first, Woodby sent down the next seven batters he faced before a bunt single to start the fourth. But Woodby induced a 6-4-3 double play and a ground out to keep the Bobcats off the board through four frames. He improves to 2-0 on the year, limiting the OU bats to three hits with one strikeout and no walks.
OHIO STATE ADDS TO THE LEAD
Ohio State pushed its lead to three runs in the bottom of the seventh when Barnwell knocked a one-out single up the middle to plate two runs.
BULLPEN CONTINUES THE SHUTOUT
Right-handed reliever Reece Calvert tossed a scoreless fifth with one strikeout before left-handed reliever Joe Stoll pitched a 1-2-3 sixth. The fifth-year senior pitched two shutout frames, allowing one walk and no hits with two strikeouts. Right-handed reliever Yianni Pavlopoulos came in to start the eighth. After giving up two hits, Pavlopoulos got the next two hitters on strikeouts looking before getting a fly out to right to leave two on base. Righty closer Seth Kinker came in to seal the deal for Buckeyes. After surrendering a hit to start the inning, Kinker settled in and retired three straight Bobcat batters to end the game and record his third save of the season.
