SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Ohio State baseball team concluded action at the 2017 Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge with a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Oregon State Sunday morning in Surprise, Ariz. The Beavers chalked up three runs in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the eighth to improve to 7-1 on the year.
The Buckeyes (3-5), who took down the tournament host on Friday night, were limited at the dish vs. right-hander Jake Thompson who tossed eight innings and gave up one run on two hits to improve to 3-0. Ohio State starting pitcher Jake Post received the loss to drop to 0-1. He allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work.
FIRST CAREER HOME RUN
Highlighting the day at the plate for the boys was junior outfielder Tre’ Gantt. A native of Fishers, Ind., the OSU lead-off hitter launched his first career home run in the top of the eighth vs. Thompson to put the Buckeyes on the board.
LEAPING CATCH ROBS A BUCKEYE CHANCE
The Buckeyes looked like they struck the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth vs. Thompson, but Oregon State center fielder Elliott Cary made a leaping grab at the track in right center and held on to take away an extra-base hit from sophomore Brady Cherry with a runner on base and keep the score at 0-0.
BEAVERS PLATE THREE IN THE FOURTH
After the catch by Cary, the Beavers carried their momentum to the batter’s box, scoring three runs on four hits and one Buckeye error in the bottom of the fourth. Post retired the first out on a ground out, however, the Beavers registered four straight hits vs. the fifth-year senior. A tough-luck chopper went over the head of first baseman Bo Coolen for the first run. Michael Gretler doubled down the line, while a fielding error pushed the score to 3-0.
CALVERT GETS OUT OF JAM IN FIFTH
Oregon State threatened to extend its lead in the fifth with two on and no down, but right-handed pitcher reliever Reece Calvert recorded a foul-out, ground out and pop-up to keep it a three-run deficit through five frames. Calvert threw three innings in relief and allowed one run, one hit with one walk.
ALSO ON THE MOUND
Right-handed pitcher Dustin Jourdan came in to begin the eighth inning and gave up one run on two hits in 0.2 innings of work. Left-handed pitcher Andrew Magno was the fourth Buckeye pitcher on the day and struck out one batter in the bottom of the eighth.
LAST CHANCE
Down four runs, Ohio State was able to put the first two runners aboard vs. Beaver left-handed reliever Max Engelbrekt, but a 4-6-3 double play lit up two outs on the board before a ground out ended the game.
UP NEXT
Ohio State travels to North Carolina for a three-game series against Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C., March 3-5.
