
Ohio State Drops Series-Opener to Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (17-15, 7-6 Big Ten) dropped its series-opener to Penn State (10-21, 4-9 Big Ten), 10-6, on Friday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium.

- With two outs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, Noah Furcht sent a solo home run out of the park to give the Buckeyes the early 1-0 lead.
- In the bottom of the second with one out, Lee Ellis doubled to right field. A single through the left side from Maddix Simpson sent Ellis home. Jacob Parr then singled to right field to put two runners on for the Buckeyes. Miles Vandenheuvel stepped up to the dish next and he went yard, sending one over the center field wall to give Ohio State a 5-0 lead over Penn State.
- The Nittany Lions got on the board in the top of the third innings after scoring on a sacrifice fly, but the Buckeyes were ahead by four, 5-1.
- A two-run home run from Penn State in the top of the fourth cut the Buckeye lead to two, 5-3.
- With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Alex Bemis was walked and then Henry Kaczmar doubled down the right field line, but both runners were stranded.
- In the top of the sixth, a solo home run from the Nittany Lions left the Buckeyes leading by one run, 5-4.
- The Nittany Lions took the lead in the top of the seventh inning, 7-5, after an RBI single and a two-RBI double.
- Kaczmar singled to center field to lead off the bottom of the seventh, and back-to-back groundouts advanced him to third. He scored on a passed ball to bring Ohio State within one run of Penn State, 7-6. Dane Harvey was walked, Ellis was hit by a pitch and Simpson walked to load the bases, but all three were left on base.
- A three-run home run for the Nittany Lions in the top of the eighth inning extended their lead, 10-6.
- With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Mason Eckelman doubled down the right field line. A groundout from Harvey advanced him to third base, but the next Buckeye was retired and Ohio State fell to Penn State, 10-6, to open the three-game series.
- Kaczmar and Vandenheuvel led the team in hits with two each.
- Vandenheuvel led the Buckeyes with three RBIs, which is his career-high.
- Jake Michalak (5-1) took the loss on the mound. He struck out two and gave up five runs on five hits in 1.0 inning pitched.
- Lincoln McVicker fanned four, tying his career-high, in 1.2 scoreless, hitless innings.
- The Buckeyes continue their series against Penn State with games Saturday, April 11 at 3 p.m. and Sunday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
