LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Playing its ninth postseason game in 10 days, the Ohio State baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Louisville Regional by No. 3 seed Wright State, 7-3, Sunday in Louisville, Ky. Wright State advances to the regional final to play host and No. 1 seed Louisville this evening at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Buckeyes conclude their 133rd season of baseball with a 44-20-1 overall record and won their ninth Big Ten tournament title in school history. The Scarlet and Gray advanced to their 20th overall NCAA tournament and first since 2009.. The 44 overall wins were the most victories by a Big Ten school this spring, tying for fifth-most wins in school history.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Buckeyes got off to a good start with a run on two hits in the opening at-bat vs. right-hander Caleb Sampen, who gave up the walk-off single to Jalen Washington just two days ago. With runners on the corners, Dawson drove in Sergakis with a single through the right side. Ohio State had no down with runners on the corners after the scoring play, but failed to push more runs home vs. Sampen.
Wright State quickly erased the early Buckeye lead with a five spot on six hits in the bottom half vs. Ohio State starter Ryan Feltner. Ryan Fucci scored one run on a RBI single before Sean Murphy drove in two Raiders on a two-run double to the gap in left center. A two-out RBI single then made it 4-1. A stolen base and infield singled pushed the Raider lead to four runs after one frame.
A solo home run by Gabe Synder extended the score to 6-1 in the bottom of the third. Ohio State trimmed the lead back four in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jalen Washington. Troy Montgomery doubled off the wall in right before Jacob Bosiokovic lined a single to right to set up Washington with his 38th RBI of the season.
Ohio State got the lead-off runner on in the seventh, but was picked off to kill the potential rally. The Scarlet and Gray cut their lead to three runs in the eighth on a RBI ground out by Troy Kuhn. Sergakis reached base on a throwing error followed by Dawson’s 25th double of 2016 to put runners on second and third. The double by Dawson tied the single-season record (Dan Seimetz, 1997). The Raiders got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly for the 7-3 score.
ON THE MOUND
Feltner gave up six runs on nine this with two strikeouts in three innings of work and falls to 3-4. Kinker relieved Feltner to begin the fourth. Kinker tossed three scoreless frames, limiting the Raider bats to two hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3.2 innings of work. Left-hander Michael Horejsei relieved Kinker with two runners on base and two gone in the bottom of the seventh and got out of the jam with a strikeout on three straight pitches. Horjesei tossed 0.1 and gave up one hit, one run with a strikeout. Right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos tossed one scoreless stanza in the bottom of the eighth.
