Four Buckeyes Taken in Final Day of MLB Draft – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four more Buckeyes were taken on the final day of the MLB Draft Saturday afternoon to put the Ohio State baseball team at the top of the Big Ten Conference with six total draft picks in 2016. Redshirt junior first baseman Jacob Bosiokovic was taken in the 19th round by the Colorado Rockies, senior left-handed pitcher Michael Horejsei was picked in the 21st round by the Chicago White Sox, senior infielder Nick Sergakis was selected in the 23rd round by the New York Mets and junior left-handed pitcher Tanner Tully was taken in the 26th round by the Cleveland Indians. The six picks ties the 1998 team for second-most in school history – one shy of the program-record seven selections set by the 1992 team. Junior left fielder Ronnie Dawson was selected in the second round by the Houston Astros, while junior centerfielder Troy Montgomery went in the eighth round to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Bosiokovic, from Delaware, Ohio, batted .275 with 38 runs scored, six doubles, three triples, 11 home runs, 34 RBI in 55 starts this past spring. Bosiokovic ranked fourth in the Big Ten in home runs (11) and 14th in the conference in slugging percentage (.488). The OSU first baseman was named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week and Big Ten Player of the Week Feb. 22. An OSU Scholar-Athlete and Academic All-Big Ten selection, Bosiokovic registered 14 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI performances. A member of the Buckeyes since 2013, Bosiokovic has a .268 career average with 89 runs scored, 157 hits, 23 doubles, five triples, 16 home runs, 94 RBI and 51 walks in 164 games played.
Horejsei, from Brunswick, Ohio, struck out a season-high 39 batters to nine walks in 31.0 innings pitched to post an impressive 4.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2016. He was 1-0 with a 2.61 ERA and a part of the Buckeye pitching staff that posted the lowest ERA in Big Ten games (2.63), while also setting the school record for strikeouts in a season (495). His 34 appearances tied for fourth on the OSU single-season record book. Horejsei, who received his degree in construction management, fanned 62 batters in 58.0 career innings pitched for the Scarlet and Gray since 2014.
Sergakis, from Columbus, Ohio, was a first team All-Big Ten selection and co-captain of the Big Ten tournament title Buckeyes. He finished the 2016 season in the Top 10 in 10 different conference batting categories. His .332 batting average was the best on the team. Sergakis scored 48 runs with 18 doubles, one triple, 10 home runs, 47 RBI, 36 walks, 18 hit by pitches and went 15-for-17 in stolen bases. He tallied 23 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI performances. In three seasons in Columbus, Sergakis batted .303 with 107 runs scored, 171 hits, 35 doubles, three triples, 12 home runs, 84 RBI, 62 walks and 24 stolen bases. The OSU Sportsmanship Award Winner this spring, Sergakis received his degree in logistics management.
Tully, a native of Elkhart, Ind., was also a first team All-Big Ten selection after being named the 2014 Big Ten Freshman of the Year two years ago. In 2016, Tully finished was 8-3 with a 2.59 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 107.2 innings pitched and 16 starts. His 2.09 league ERA ranked fifth in the Big Ten this season. Tully has been on the most efficient pitchers in OSU history. He is third in the career record book in fewest walks allowed (45) and sixth in career ERA (2.93). In his career, Tully has fanned 175 batters in 276.0 IP, which is 12th all-time in school history.
