COLUMBUS, Ohio — Junior center fielder Troy Montgomery was taken in the eighth round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday afternoon on day two of the 2016 MLB Draft. Montgomery, from Fortville, Ind., is the second Buckeye to be taken in the draft after Ronnie Dawson was picked in the second round last night by the Houston Astros.
Montgomery batted .297 with 51 runs scored, 70 hits, 14 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 34 RBI, 50 walks and 21 stolen bases in 2016. His 50 walks tied for fourth on the OSU single-season record book. The OSU centerfielder led the Buckeyes during their postseason run to the Big Ten tournament title and NCAA Regional appearance, being named to both the B1G All-Tournament Team and Louisville Regional All-Tournament Team. Montgomery batted .409 (9-for-22) with four runs scored, four RBI, three walks and one stolen base in six games at the Big Ten Tournament in Omaha, Neb. In the Louisville Regional, Montgomery hit .600 (6-for-10) with two runs scored, two doubles, two RBI, two walks and one stolen base. Montgomery was named a 2016 preseason All-American after earning second team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore. In 2015, Montgomery tied the OSU single-season record with 35 stolen bases, while batting .317 at the plate.
From Mt. Vernon High School, Montgomery has a .289 career batting average with 123 runs scored, 32 doubles, nine triples, 14 home runs, 83 RBI, 100 walks and 60 stolen bases. He ranks in the OSU record book in three batting categories, including third in career steals (60), 11th in career triples (9) and 15th in career walks (100).
