Buckeyes Suffer 13-12 Loss at No. 17 Johns Hopkins – Ohio State Buckeyes

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost a Big Ten game at No. 17 Johns Hopkins, 13-12, Saturday at Homewood Field in Baltimore. The Buckeyes, who trailed 8-5 at halftime, drew within one four times in the second half, including with 1:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, but were unable to get the equalizer.
Next up, Ohio State (5-7, 0-2 B1G) will host Michigan in the 2016 Showdown in the Shoe at 11 a.m. Saturday, with BTN televising the game. The matchup precedes the Buckeye football spring game.
Against Johns Hopkins (7-5, 1-1 B1G), Buckeye junior Johnny Pearson had a career-high tying four goals, while senior Carter Brown and junior Eric Fannell each had four points with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Colin Chell scored twice. Junior Jake Withers won 18 faceoffs, marking a career high, and had a team-high eight groundballs. Brown’s first goal of the game was the 100th of his career.
The Buckeyes and Blue Jays were tied after the first quarter. Buckeye freshman Jack Jasinski opened the scoring with a goal with the shot clock on, assisted by Fannell, at 10:56. The Blue Jays scored the next two, at 8:31 and 6:58, to take a 2-1 lead. Pearson scored unassisted at 5:46 to tie the game. Shots were 10-2 in favor of the Buckeyes in the quarter, with the Blue Jays’ goalie making five saves.
The Blue Jays outscored the Buckeyes 6-3 in the second quarter to take an 8-5 lead into halftime. Johns Hopkins scored four of the first five goals of the quarter – at 12:25, 11:47, 8:03 and 6:49 – with Pearson scoring for the Buckeyes on a one-handed shot, set up by Fannell, at 10:35. The Buckeyes scored back-to-back at 6:38 and 4:58. Chell scored on a fast break, set up by freshman Logan Maccani, before Brown tallied off an assist from Austin Shanks with the timer on. Johns Hopkins scored twice in the final 1:44, with the second coming with 18 seconds left. Ohio State was outshot, 13-7, in the quarter. Tom Carey had four saves in the Buckeye cage.
The teams combined for 10 goals in the third quarter. Ohio State started the quarter with the ball and a man-up chance and Pearson converted, assisted by Brown, nine seconds into the period. The Blue Jays then scored back-to-back goals at 12:17 and 10:28, with the second man-up, for a 10-6 lead.
The Buckeyes scored the next three goals to make it a one-goal game (10-9). Pearson’s shot snuck through, assisted by Brown, at 8:43. After a save on the next possession, senior defenseman Robby Haus picked up the groundball and passed to classmate and fellow defenseman Chris Mahoney. He scored on a fast break at 8:20, notching his fourth goal of the season. The assist was the second of Haus’ career and first since April 12, 2014 at Michigan. At 5:10 Fannell beat his defenders and drove the net, scoring into the top corner.
Hopkins ended the Buckeye run on Ryan Brown’s goal at 4:00 but off the next faceoff Brendan Barger picked up the groundball and found Fannell outside the cage and he converted for an 11-10 game. The teams again traded goals before the end of the quarter. At 2:27 a Johns Hopkins shot deflected off a Buckeye defender and in. At 1:12 Chell came around the cage and scored unassisted, making the score 12-11. Each team had 10 shots in the quarter, with Carey making four saves for Ohio State.
After the offensive outburst in the second and third quarters, each team scored just once in the fourth, with both goals in the final 4:03. Hopkins’ John Crawley scored man-up to push the Blue Jays’ lead to two (13-11). At 1:34 Brown scored unassisted for the Buckeyes for a one-goal game (13-12).
The Blue Jays won the next faceoff but turned the ball over after going in the crease. Ohio State was able to clear and then took timeout. The Buckeyes had a shot go wide and the Blue Jays then took a timeout with 12.7 seconds remaining. The Buckeyes turned the ball over shortly after returning to play and the Blue Jays closed out the win. Ohio State had 13 shots in the fourth quarter, with Hopkins’ goalie making four saves. The Blue Jays attempted six shots in the stanza.
For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Blue Jays, 40-31. Carey had eight saves for the Buckeyes, with Brock Turnbaugh making 13 saves for the Blue Jays.
Ohio State won 18-of-28 faceoffs, with Withers taking all 28. Johns Hopkins had the edge in groundballs, 30-27. Withers had a team-best eight, while freshman Matt Borges, who had a Buckeye-best two caused turnovers, picked up four groundballs.
The Buckyes were 1-for-3 on man-up chances and Hopkins converted 2-of-5 opportunities.
