Buckeyes Top Wolverines in Showdown in the Shoe, 10-7 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a beautiful day in Ohio Stadium, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team defeated Michigan, 10-7, in a Big Ten Conference game. The crowd for the eighth edition of the Showdown in the Shoe, which was announced as 24,581 at halftime, grew to nearly 55,000 by the end of the game. The Buckeye football spring game followed, with Ohio Stadium at capacity, setting a national spring game attendance mark of 100,189.
The Buckeyes (6-7, 1-2 B1G) trailed Michigan 3-2 after the first quarter but outscored the Wolverines 4-1 over the next two periods, shutting out Michigan (3-8, 0-3 B1G) for 29:06 to pull ahead. Michigan scored 1:10 into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to one (6-5) but Ohio State responded with a four-goal run to extend the lead to 10-5.
Sophomore Trevor Hodgins led the Buckeyes with three goals, marking his first career hat trick. Senior Carter Brown had two goals and two assists for four points and and junior Johnny Pearson had three points on two goals and an assist. Junior Austin Shanks had a three-point day with a goal and two helpers. Junior Jake Withers won 13-of-21 faceoffs and had a game-high seven groundballs, with junior goalie Tom Carey making 11 saves for the Buckeyes.
Next up, Ohio State will travel to College Park, Md., for a game vs. Maryland at 7 p.m. April 24, with BTN televising the game. The Buckeyes close their home schedule at 7 p.m. April 30 vs. Rutgers in Ohio Stadium.
The Wolverines led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. Pearson scored off a pass from Brown just 54 seconds into the game before Michigan scored the next two – at 13:23 and 12:09 – to take a 2-1 lead. Brown tallied man-up from distance, assisted by Shanks, to tie the game at 4:18. In the final minute, Michigan’s Chase Young scored to put the Wolverines back ahead (3-2). Shots were 11-8 in favor of the Buckeyes in the quarter, with UM’s goalie making six saves.
Ohio State outscored Michigan 4-1 over the next two quarters. The Buckeyes tallied the only two goals of the second quarter to tie the game and take the lead. Hodgins drove the cage and scored at 12:14 and at 1:19 Pearson created space from his defenders and scored to put the Buckeyes ahead. Ohio State had eight shots in the quarter, with Michigan attempting six. Each goalie made four stops.
In the third quarter, Brown found Hodgins at 11:59 and just 38 seconds later Shanks found Fannell cutting in front with the Buckeyes man up and he converted for a 6-3 Buckeye lead. With 1:34 left in the quarter Michigan’s Sean McCanna scored to end the Wolverines’ scoreless streak at 29:06. Ohio State had 10 shots in the stanza and held Michigan to four.
The Wolverines scored the first goal of the fourth quarter at 13:50, making it a one-goal game (6-5). Ohio State answered with a four-goal run for a 10-6 lead. At 11:36 Brown scored unassisted while getting pushed down and 1:06 later freshman Jack Jasinski scored unassisted. With the timer on, Pearson set up Shanks at 8:52 and Hodgins completed his hat trick at 4:02, assisted by senior Ryan Hunter. UM scored the game’s final two goals at 2:35 and :53, with the second man-down. Each team had 11 shot attempts.
For the game, the Buckeyes outshot the Wolverines, 40-29. Carey had 11 saves for the Buckeyes and UM goalie Gerald Logan had 19 stops.
Ohio State won 13-of-21 faceoffs, with Withers taking all 21. The Buckeyes had the edge in groundballs, 25-23, led by Withers with seven.
The Buckeyes were 2-for-4 on man-up chances and stopped Michigan on two opportunities.
Postgame notes: The game had the seventh-highest attendance for a men’s lacrosse regular season game in NCAA history … Hodgins had the second multiple-goal game of his career and first since scoring twice vs. Dartmouth in 2015; he entered the game with three goals this season while playing in 11 games … Pearson has 10 goals and 12 points in his last four games combined and now has a career-high 15 goals, two assists and 17 points this year … Shanks, the Buckeyes’ leader with 16 assists and 29 points, had his eighth multiple point game of the year and extended his point streak to 11 … Jasinski has a goal in each of the last three games and leads the Buckeye rookies with seven goals and 10 points … Brown had his sixth multiple goal game of the year and has a team-best 17 goals this season, ranking second with 26 points … Withers has won 157-of-261 (.602) faceoffs this season and has a team-best 99 groundballs, ranking among the nation’s leaders and leading the B1G in groundballs per game … Ohio State is 5-0 vs. Michigan since the Wolverines moved to Division I.
