COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Ohio State baseball team fell in a doubleheader at Maryland Friday at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium in College Park, Md. The Terrapins (17-15, 3-2 B1G) won game one, 3-0, and rallied in the tenth inning in game two to claim a 2-1 victory during the night cap. With the two losses, the Buckeyes fall to 19-10-1 and 2-3 in Big Ten games in 2016.
GAME TWO: OSU 1, UMD 2 (10 Innings)
HEARTBREAKER IN GAME TWO
Despite not allowing a hit in 9.1 innings, the Buckeyes fell in a 2-1 heartbreaker in game two of the twinbill from College Park. Ohio State starter John Havird had a fantastic performance on the mound, not allowing a hit in eight innings of work with seven punch outs. The Terrapins capitalized on a strikeout-wild pitch and fielding error with two down to tie the game at 1-all in the bottom of the ninth before Madison Nickens knocked a two-out RBI single to center field in the bottom of the tenth for the walk-off victory.
ICE COLD
Havird was unhittable in game two vs. the Terps, tossing a career-high eight innings and allowing no hits with one unearned run, two walks and season-high seven strikeouts in a no decision outing. It was an incredible performance in cold weather conditions on the road in College Park for No. 23. The native of Mesa, Ariz., Havird mixed his pitches well and got ahead in the counts to roll over a bunch of ground balls – 12 in fact. His 98th pitch hit a second UMD batter on the night to start the bottom of the ninth and was relieved by left-handed pitcher Michael Horejsei.
TERPS CAPTALIZE IN THE NINTH
With no down and a runner on first, Horejsei got a deep fly to right field to put the first out on the board. Redshirt sophomore right-hander Yianni Pavlopoulos registered the second out on a grounder to Craig Nennig. However, a strike out and wild pitch kept the Terps alive. An error then allowed the tying run to score. Pavlopoulos forced extra innings with a ground out to second base.
EXTRA INNING TALK
Ohio State had two runners on in the top of the tenth following a single by Troy Montgomery and walk to Ronnie Dawson. But UMD right-handed reliever Zach Guth fanned the final out to retire the OSU side. In the bottom of the tenth, the Terps claimed their first hit of the game on a one-out single up the middle by Zach Jancarski, who stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. On a 1-2 pitch, Nickens lined a single to center field to end the game. Pavlopoulos received the loss to fall to 2-2.
BUCKEYES ON THE BOARD FIRST
The first six frames went scoreless until a run by the Scarlet and Gray in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by freshman Brady Cherry. Senior co-captain Nick Sergakis was hit by a pitch vs. Maryland starter Brian Shaffer to start the inning. A one-out single by junior co-captain Jalen Washington put runners on the corners before Cherry sent a deep fly ball in front of the warning track in left to push Sergakis home. Ohio State had the bases loaded in the eighth, but failed to score an insurance run when reliever Robert Galligan induced a grounder up the middle for a force out at second base.
GAME ONE: OSU 0, UMD 3
PITCHER’S DUEL IN SERIES OPENER
Fans that got off work early and made it out to the ballpark for game one saw the first of two pitcher’s duels. Maryland starting pitcher Taylor Broom was perfect through 5.1 innings of work, while Ohio State left-handed starter Tanner Tully limited the Terps to three runs on three hits. A combined 30 hitters were retired in order at one point in the game as both hurlers were in a rhythm on the mound and getting ahead in the majority of the counts. Bloom limited the OSU hitters to three hits on four strikeouts to improve 5-2, while Tully punched out eight, while allowing just three runs on three hits, but received the tough-luck loss in a quality start to fall to 4-2 in 2016.
TERPS STRIKE FIRST
Maryland scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a chilly and breezy afternoon around campus in College Park. After a lead-off walk, Nick Dunn hit an infield single to the left side and advanced to second on a throwing error. A bloop single to left by Nick Cieri plated the first run of the doubleheader followed by a passed ball allowed a second UMD run to score.
TULLY TALK
After battling through a 24-pitch first inning, Tully was “mighty, mighty tough,” putting down 16 UMD hitters in a row. He limited the UMD bats to two runs on two hits through the first five stanzas. His streak ended, though, with two down in the bottom of the sixth when Marty Costes hit a solo home run to dead center to push the deficit to three runs. He tied his season-high with eight innings of work, allowing three runs on three hits with one walk and eight strikeouts – one shy of his career high.
SERIES FINALE
Both teams will have the day off tomorrow due to impending weather. The Buckeyes and Terps meet in the series finale at 1 p.m. ET Sunday in College Park, Md. Fans can listen on AM 1460 ESPN or on OhioStateBuckeyes.com.
