Buckeyes Fall at No. 5 Maryland, 10-8 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team lost a Big Ten Conference road game to No. 5 Maryland, 10-8, Sunday night in Maryland Stadium. The Buckeyes (6-8, 1-3 B1G) close the regular season at 7 p.m. Saturday when they host Rutgers in Ohio Stadium. The Ohio State senior class will be recognized pregame and BTN will televise the contest.
The Buckeyes led Maryland (11-2, 4-0 B1G) 4-3 after the first quarter but were outscored 7-2 over the next two quarters to trail 10-6 entering the fourth. Ohio State scored twice early in the final stanza, but could not draw even. Senior Carter Brown had a team-high three goals for the Buckeyes, while Jarret Hassfeld scored the first two goals of his collegiate career. Junior Jake Withers won 11 faceoffs, picking up four groundballs, with sophomore Erik Evans and freshman Matt Borges each picking up three loose balls.
The teams traded goals twice to open the game, with Maryland going ahead each time. The Terps opened the scoring at 12:30 before Hassfeld notched his first career goal at 9:09. Maryland went ahead at 8:30 before junior Eric Fannell found classmate Austin Shanks with the timer on. Junior Johnny Pearson put Ohio State ahead for the first time (3-2) at 2:37. Each team scored in the final 1:34, with Maryland tallying to tie the game and Brown scoring with the timer on with 14 seconds left in the quarter. Shots were 7-6 in favor of Maryland in the stanza and redshirt junior Tom Carey had four saves in the Ohio State goal.
Ohio State scored the first goal of the second quarter, with sophomore Trevor Hodgins tallying with the timer on at 13:08, putting the Buckeyes ahead 5-3. The Terps then went on a seven-goal run, with three goals to close the half and the first four of the third quarter. Maryland led 6-5 at halftime, tying the game at 5:36 and going ahead with 45 seconds left in the second quarter.
The Terps scored three times in the first 3:46 of the third quarter, including a man-up goal at 14:38, and outscored the Buckeyes 4-1 in the stanza for a 10-6 lead through 45 minutes. Brown ended the Maryland run with a goal at 3:26 of the third, assisted by sophomore Colin Chell. Maryland had 11 shots in the quarter, with Carey making three saves, and Ohio State attempted five.
Ohio State scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter and had the ball late, but the rally fell short. Hassfeld notched his second of the night at 10:07 and Brown completed his hat trick at 9:14. Ohio State had eight of the 11 shots in the quarter and the Terps’ goalie had three stops.
For the game, the Buckeyes were outshot, 30-26. Carey had eight saves, with Maryland’s Kyle Bernlohr stopping six shots.
Ohio State won 11-of-19 faceoffs, with Withers taking all 19. The Buckeyes had the edge in groundballs, 21-18, led by Withers with four.
Each team had one man-up chance, with Maryland converting its opportunity.
Postgame notes: Brown has seven goals and 11 points in his last three games combined, ranking first on the team with 20 goals and second with 29 points … Hassfeld was playing in his fifth game of the season … Shanks, the Buckeyes’ leader with 16 assists and 30 points, extended his point streak to 12 … Pearson has 11 goals and 13 points in his last five games combined and now has a career-high 16 goals, two assists and 18 points this year … Withers has won 168-of-280 (.600) faceoffs this season and has a team-best 103 groundballs, ranking among the nation’s leaders and leading the B1G in groundballs per game.
