VIDEO: Kohl’s Game-winning Goal
COLUMBUS, Ohio – You couldn’t have scripted a better finish for Nate Kohl against his former team Friday night in Ann Arbor. Kohl, a junior transfer from Michigan and native of Hilliard, Ohio, scored the game-winning goal with 23 seconds remaining in double overtime to claim a 1-0 win for the Ohio State men’s soccer team in front of 1,705 fans at U-M Soccer Stadium. With the crucial win, the Buckeyes improve to 5-10-1 overall and 3-3-1 in Big Ten play, while the Wolverines fall to 2-9-4 overall and 1-5-1 in conference action.
“It was a very difficult game tonight and Michigan unfortunately is not having a very good season, but I think they are a good team and played very well tonight,” head coach John Bluem said. “That was an emotional and big win for us. Our season isn’t going the way we wanted to either, but we are hoping to play our best soccer when it comes time for the Big Ten Tournament.”
THE INCREDIBLE FINISH
With less than a minute to go in a back-and-forth match, redshirt freshman goalkeeper Parker Siegfried threw a desperation toss all the way out to midfield and connected with senior Ben Fitzpatrick, who found space and began a strong run through Michigan territory. With numbers, Fitzpatrick played a pass to the right wing to Kohl, who one-touched it and fired a shot into the lower left of net for the game-winner at 109:37. It was Kohl’s team-best sixth goal of the season and first game-winner of his career. Siegfried claimed his first collegiate assist, while Fitzpatrick picked up his fourth helper of the year.

HOMECOMING CRASHER
It was homecoming weekend for the Wolverines. For Kohl, it also was a return back to Ann Arbor, but this time he sported Scarlet and Gray.
“I just saw a three on two and they passed it to me,” Kohl said. “I knew I had to take a good touch towards goal and hit it as good as I could at the back post and it went in. I have nothing but respect for them. It felt good to come back here at Michigan, but it feels great to get a win for my hometown.”
BUCKEYES CONTROL POSSESSION IN SCORELESS FIRST
Ohio State had the best of the few first-half opportunities. In the third minute, Kohl rushed through midfield with a strong run to earn the first corner of the game, but the Buckeyes couldn’t find an early lead. Abdi Mohamed had a free kick go wide in the sixth minute from 25 yards out. Fitzpatrick hurled in a dangerous long throw-in from the far side, but a UM defender luckily made contact and it deflected right to his goalkeeper. Hunter Robertson was open with space from the near post on the chance. Kohl had the best look in the first half in the 26th minute when he worked his way inside the box, but his shot sailed wide of the far post from 16 yards out. A header by Robertson off a free kick also went wide in the 32nd minute. At half, shots were an even 4-4.
SOLDAT WITH A GREAT LOOK
The Buckeyes went on the attack in the 69th minute started again by a run from Kohl. The OSU forward played the ball to Soldat into the box, but his well-struck shot from 12 yards out was punched away by Louro. Kohl tried to volley the deflection, but it wide of net from the far side.
DEFENSE STANDS TALL
The Wolverines had 18 shots, but only had two on target against an organized Buckeye defense. Tyler Kidwell recovered well in the 67th minute to stop a Wolverine counter. In the 75th, Mohamed blocked a shot inside a crowded box before it was cleared away. Michigan tried to counter in the final minute of regulation, but Austin Bergstrom came up with a big tackle from the top of the 18 to deny the chance. Chances were hard to come by in the first overtime for both sides. Bergstrom blocked a shot in the 99th minute on a one-timer by Ivo Cerda.
SIEGFRIED SHUTOUT
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Parker Siegfried made only two saves of the night, but both came in double overtime in a minute span. The Wolverines had seven shots in the overtime periods, but were kept out of the net by Siegfried. He earns his third shutout of the season and improves to 5-10-1 overall. Shots were 18-17 in favor of the Wolverines, while Ohio State held a 6-3 lead in corners.
